Interview: Jay B. Ballesteros
Luca Curci talks with Jay B. Ballesteros during FUTURE LANDSCAPES, the third appointment of BORDERS ART FAIR 2021, at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello.

Jay B. Ballesteros is a photographer and graphic designer based in Saugerties, NY. His work focuses on portrait photography, landscape photography, and creating digital mixed media artwork. Using his skills as a photographer and designer Jay is looking to explore and tell the stories within us.

Luca Curci – What is art for you?
Jay Ballesteros –
Any medium that can inspire a person and that makes one question things in life.

LC – What’s your background? What is the experience that has influenced your work the most?
JB –
I went to a design school in college to study 3D animation and design. After graduation, I moved to New York City and have worked there as a graphic designer and photographer. Living over 20 years in NYC has been a major influence on my work.

LC – Did your style change over the years? In which way?
JB –
Yes, it did change over the years. When I first started, I was highly interested in the technical aspects of learning a design software program. In the past few years, I started reading more art history and studying renaissance painters after taking more courses in photography.

LC – What is your creative process like?
JB –
It’s a mix of detailed planning and research at the start, but staying flexible and spontaneous during the creative process.

LC – What is the most challenging part about creating your artworks?
JB –
Creating artwork in various media (i.e., video, print, digital ) can be challenging in keeping the focus on a project. Planning the details can sometimes be overwhelming that I lose having fun in creating a piece.

LC – Are your artworks focused on a specific theme?
JB –
My pieces include travel and landscape photos. I love exploring new places because it helps me to stay curious and creative. I imagine about those who lived there in the past and its history.

LC – Did your style change over the years? In which way?
JB –
Looking back at some of my past artwork my goal was to create a photographic replica of the area that I visited. Recently I’ve been experimenting with more of an abstract look to my photography.

LC – What do you think about ITSLIQUID Platform?
JB –
It’s great to have a platform for artists around the world in a variety of creative disciplines to exhibit in one show.

LC – Do you think ITSLIQUID GROUP can represent an opportunity for artists?
JB –
Yes, I believe that it can introduce your work to an international audience. And it is a way to network with different artists and shows.
