Interview: Jiaqing Mo
Luca Curci talks with the artist Jiaqing Mo, the winner of HONORABLE MENTION of ITSLIQUID INTERNATIONAL CONTEST 5TH EDITION 2017.
Jiaqing Mo is born in July 1993, in Hangzhou, China. Currently she lives and works in London and Shanghai She studied: 2016 – 2017 MA(Distinction) Fine Art, UAL Chelsea College of Arts, London, UK and 2011 – 2015 BA Film Directing, China Academy of Art, Hangzhou, China. She won different prizes: Winner of The Tiffany&Co. X Outset Studiomakers Prize, London, UK (2017); Awarded The P:I:G Foundation Prize 2018 by Henrik Vibskov, Copenhagen, Denmark (2018). She has participated in several exhibitions: “Graduation Exhibition of Media and Animation Department”, CAA Building 3 Gallery, Hangzhou, China (2015); “51 ZERO/ Film and New Media Festival 2017”, The Royal Dockyard Church, London, UK (2017); “Chelsea College of Arts MA Fine Art Summer Show”, Chelsea College of Arts, London, UK (2017); “The Tiffany & Co. Luca Curci – What is art for you?
Jiaqing Mo – Art is therapeutic way for me. Many art works of mine are about treating people and psychological journey… I knit clips together in my art works to show how I am thinking and how the world I created.
LC – Which subject are you working on?
JM – I am working on film, photography, installation and performance…. My subject is fine art, and I used a lot of philosophy and psychology to making script, then use my personal visual way to showing it.

LC – Which is the role the artist plays in the society? And the contemporary art?
JM – I think Artist is kind of sculpting and reflecting the society, we are not only making works to show for people, we are also reflecting human ecology and social condition by even unconsciousness. And the contemporary art as well, it is showing the moment condition, past, and future.
LC – Are your artworks focused on a specific theme?
JM – I would like to analyze all the subject, such as sociology, anthropology, architecture, music. My position is director in my work, I always record all the details and clips, then finally connect them together.

LC – Did your style change over the years? In which way?
JM – Not really, in early age, I was making experimental film, now I am change to more mixed type, film with installation and with performance.
LC – Do you agree with our vision of art and what do you think about the theme of the contest?
JM – Yes, I think artist need more possibilities and opportunities to be succeed.
LC – What is the message linked to the artwork you have shown in this event? How is it connected to the theme of the contest?
JM – My work is showing the international event, I think it shows oriental and western mixed in my work.

LC – What is your idea about ITSLIQUID GROUP?
JM – It gives artist opportunities to showing their works for public and international, but i wish the entrance fee could be more easy-going as being artist is really difficult, maybe it can make some level of artists type.
LC – Do you think ITSLIQUID GROUP can represent an opportunity for artists?
JM – Yes.
LC – Would you suggest a collaboration with us? What do you think about our services?
JM – I hope so if their any possibility.
