Interview: Karin De Ponti
Luca Curci talks with Karin De Ponti during OUT OF BALANCE, second appointment of CANVAS Art Fair 2020, at THE LINE Contemporary Art Space in London.

Karin De Ponti is a musical artist and actress. She started out as a music producer and songwriter in dance music, releasing records in Italy, the UK and Germany. Karin then devoted herself to acting studying in Milan and London. He has published two plays: ”Amore in rosso” (2017) and the short film ”The wood” (2018). In 2020 he created ”Flow, you can make a difference”, and launched two record labels: ”The wood-the label” for film soundtracks and ”Cocky” for progressive and electronic music.

Luca Curci – What is art for you?
Karin De Ponti –
Art is my reason for living.

LC – What’s your background? What is the experience that has influenced your work the most?
KDP –
I come from the world of dance music as a DJ. I was producing songs all over the world (UK, Germany, Japan and Italy). Then I started studying acting and working as an actress. I am an author of music and theater. Now I am studying music to apply for the conservatory of music. I graduated in Venice in foreign languages, with a thesis on Japanese cinema. My works of art are a mixture of all the experiences I have had in my life. Recently, I have started using the music I compose in acting and video works. When I started working as an actress I was literally split in two and tried to hide my musical side; but now I’m proud of my two passions and I constantly try to mix acting and music. Music and nature (the woods) influence most of my works.

LC – What is your creative process like?
KDP –
I repeat the same things or actions every day: when I have to perform something, I train every day by repeating exactly the same actions or words. The more you train, the better your performance

LC – How is being an artist nowadays?
KDP –
Being an artist can heal the world.

LC – Did your style change over the years? In which way?
KDP –
I have changed, and consequently my needs have changed too. Art should have a purpose, such as giving a voice to people who have no voice.

LC – What is the message linked to the artwork you have shown in this exhibition? How is it connected to the theme of the entire festival?
KDP –
We live in a super fast and demanding world (apart from this block that has slowed everything down). Sometimes we think we can have a solution to our problems from the web. We are super influenced by social media, we are looking for success, money; and very often we find ourselves OUT OF BALANCE. We feel lost and confused because maybe we have lost the way. (This is a caption from my short ”The Wood”). We need something to reconnect with our real needs and feelings. I think nature can heal us; also to return to the raw things: the essential things can be a solution. In search of the beauty of art: a painting, a book, music.

LC – Do you agree with our vision of art and what do you think about the theme of the festival?
KDP –
My artwork is appropriate to the festival theme OUT OF BALANCE.

LC – What are your suggestions about our services? Is there something more we can provide to artists?
KDP –
I think you did a good job: a friend and colleague of mine was present at the opening of OUT OF BALANCE in London and sent me a video about my screening and the party. She was excited! Your work with media and social media is also appropriate and good!

LC – Do you think ITSLIQUID GROUP can represent an opportunity for artists?
KDP –
It is a great opportunity to be seen as an artist. Unfortunately these difficult days are not good for the artistic world. I was supposed to perform a live show at The Line in October along with the screening of my short film “The Wood”, but it was not possible for me to be there due to the legal restrictions on the pandemic. I hope to do it as soon as things get better.

LC – Did you enjoy cooperating with us?
KDP –
