Interview: Katarina Vidmar
Luca Curci
talks with Katarina Vidmar during VISIONS, third appointment of CANVAS INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR 2023, held in Venice at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello.

“I am very grateful that painting is my profession and my mission. Someone once told me that I was a painter in all my previous lives. It is quite possible. The brush is an extension of my body. It is my body that gives me this experience of life. That is why I love it, respect it, listen to it, nourish it”.

Luca Curci – What are your thoughts while you paint?
Katarina Vidmar – While painting I tend to be connected with deeper levels of my being and focus on what I feel. My feeling is the one that is leading me. Thoughts are rather obstacles than anything else. Many years ago I developed the so-called Meditative painting. The focus is on creation, how I feel the body and the feelings. Breathing is very important in the process. The painting, creating is a reward in itself. And it all shows in the painting. I am looking for that special level of being between seen and unseen when the magic starts to reveal itself through the painting process.

LC – What is the trigger that leads you to paint?
KV –
I am one of those painters who constantly create. It is the way of living. We live in rather turbulent times and by painting certain motives I paint myself through it. I am attracted to motives from nature. Through the creative process, I connect deeply to the beauty and magic of nature and that is a healing for me. I just feel what motive I need to paint. For instance, the painting that was exhibited on Visions. I painted it a few days after my father died. It was a really difficult time for me. So I had to paint myself through tough feelings. And felt so much better after finishing it. So that painting, The Eternal Garden, has special meaning for me.

LC – How do you choose your subjects? Is it a reasoned or instinctive process?
KV –
I follow my instincts, so I paint what I feel. I prefer to paint translucent motives of nature with watercolours and nudes or abstract with acrylics.

LC – Do you use art to express something in particular? Is it your medium of expression?
KV –
By all means. In this crazy world, I find connection and respect for nature essential for the better future of humankind. Many have forgotten, that we are nature too. If we pollute the rivers, and the air, kill animals, etc. we are polluting and killing ourselves. So my paintings are not just allegory to nature, are also healing for those, who are seeking. Looking for that lost connection, oneness with nature.

LC – How do you feel when you see your work completed?
KV –
Usually I feel good, mainly because every painting is a process and I love to be in the state of creation. Usually, I am surprised by the outcome.

LC – We were attracted by your last artistic production, has the artwork presented been created for the exhibition or as a part of pre-existing works?
KV –
As I mentioned before I painted it when my father died, and it was a few days before the deadline for entries.

LC – What do you think about the concept of this exhibition? How did it inspire you?
KV –
I think that art has to be the one to show the way. And I find your concept great and meaningful.

LC – Did you enjoy cooperating with ITSLIQUID?
KV –
Yes, especially I loved that I got to visit Venice and I saw some great exhibitions there too.
