Luca Curci talks with Kevin Coyle during CONTEMPORARY VENICE 2018 at THE ROOM Contemporary Art Space.

Kevin Coyle is a painter and visual artist living and working in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is a recent MFA graduate in Studio Art from Moore College of Art and Design where he focused on oil painting. Coyle’s interest in film started while he was an undergrad in the early 2000’s, but his recent focus on painting has drastically changed his approach to film. As a former news writer his earlier film work was grounded in exposition and sketch comedy. Years of focus on gestural painting has pivoted his interest into atmosphere and sound.

Luca Curci – What is art for you?
Kevin Coyle – Art for me is color, movement and sound.

LC – What’s your background? What is the experience that has influenced your work the most?
KC – Early in my career I was a writer and most of my work starts in my mind through phrasing my experiences. I never considered myself a good writer, but always had the itch to create.

LC – What is the most challenging part about creating your artworks?
KC – Knowing when a painting is finished. It’s hard to say if its ever finished or not. It’s hard decided when to move on to the next one.

LC – Did your style change over the years? In which way?
KC – Yes because I focused more on watercolor and inks for most of my life. When I went back to school for my MFA I rediscovered my love for painting.

LC – Do you agree with our vision of art and what do you think about the theme of the festival?
KC – I think the theme of the festival is fantastic because of the global nature.

LC – What do you think about ITSLIQUID Platform?
KC – I think the platform works because its connects artists from all over the world.

LC – Do you think ITSLIQUID GROUP can represent an opportunity for artists?
KC – Yes
