Interview: Lord Nicolaus Dinter
Luca Curci
talks with Lord Nicolaus Dinter during LONDON CONTEMPORARY ART FAIR 2021, at THE LINE Contemporary Art Space.

“I started with analogue photography and later with digital photography. I work with people together in every case of my Life. I try to catch the emotions, the feelings of a situation, or the spirit of the people in front of my camera. This is only a situation, a second but this could be important. I work with analogue and digital cameras and enjoy it, I try to find a new way, not only Photoshop. I normally do not talk much about myself, but time after time I do it a little bit. I have a lot of ideas and emotions and try to sort them under constructive ideas. Ten years before I started to found a self–help – group for traumatized people and borderliners. So I have two great projects in my life, photography and social help. I am a daydreamer and have wishes, but without all these emotions life seems for me boring. I need my emotions and wishes to get the day easier. It is the motor of my life. Of course, all projects an expensive and I try to collect money to finance my work. But the luck and success you get back from people are a holy thanks. All time I try the best I could give. Photographing is an important way to show new inspiration and new emotions. I love to work, with emotions, and with people. A new perspective, and new ideas from and with people is the way I try to go. I hope you enjoy this book, and the photos, and get a new inspiration.”

Luca Curci – What is art for you?
Lord Nicolaus Dinter –
There are some faces of art. One is the academic side, most people take a look or think this is the only side, but it isn’t. Handcraft or street – art is another side, the modern technic gives new ways of art. My art is to work with people or emotions, to find new perspectives. To work with analogue or digitals cameras and catch photos as they are. I am not a Photoshopper, I try to take photos in one step. So it seems to be easy, but it isn’t. This is on side of art, one of thousand sides.

LC – What’s your background? What is the experience that has influenced your work the most?
LND –
My background is analogue photography, I love to work with cameras that take a moment on celluloid. I worked on different kinds of cameras, from 35mm to large floor standing cameras, which are bigger than a man could be. Influenced? Oh, yeah, my whole Life has influenced me. Some artists I love, are Helmut Newton, Mc Curry, Photographer of the 50th of the last century, Vincent van Gogh, Monet, Manet, the impressionist, the youth stile, Pablo Picasso and some more. Sometimes I meet artists and talk to them because I like their work, so they get an influence on my work.

LC – Where do you find your inspiration?
LND –
By people, but that is only the half, a Muse is the most fact, it could inspire more than everything else. I try to work with positive people, who give me or the situation, a positive feeling. Nature is also a positive inspiration. If I feel well I can work excellent. I am a team player, which means the inspiration comes with a team and grown-up to geniuses’ work.

LC – How is being an artist nowadays?
LND –
Hard, to be an artist means to search for sponsors. It is hard not to lose your character in your work or to develop a character. You have a lot of influence or expectations from others. You could try a lot of things, but you should do it out of your heart. If you can touch a human with a photo you do a great job, which is applause enough. That means, don’t look after the money, be yourself.

LC -Did your style change over the years? In which way?
LND –
I think so, my style changes sometimes, I do not know in which way, but I try to do new things. I mean, Frank Sinatra told it, “I did it my way….” So the style will change, but not my character. I love to do new things, but I could only be as good as people, or things are in front of my camera. Of course, I look for new courses to learn new skills, to develop new things, I am not sure, if I get it, but I try.

LC – What do you think about the concept of this festival? How did it inspire you?
LND –
I love concepts like this, they give me a theme and I look for photos, which means they inspire me. Sometimes I wish to have more time or a photo studio, so as models, to take some photos for that exhibition or theme, but they are to need time and sponsors. Perhaps a discussion with people, which like to work with me together, Models, visage, curators or everyone who be a part of it. So I search to find a photo or more to send, which was compatible with the theme.

LC – In which way the artwork presented in our exhibition is connected with the festival’s theme?
LND –
I search for photos, which means I look if a photo gives my interpretation a feeling or thought, which could be compared. If I found more or if I am not sure, I ask. That is simple, but it takes time to make some thoughts about the theme and get a point of a few. Of course, it is my one, without influence.

LC – Do you think ITSLIQUID GROUP can represent an opportunity for artists?
LND –
Yes, I think so. Sometimes I think exhibitions creator could send more information to the press because art is a part of our Life. To reach more people, to change opportunities, that is what art could do, to find new ways. So Itsliquid group is one step to go, it gives me opportunities to show my art.

LC – Did you enjoy cooperating with us?
LND –
Of course, you are so politely, sensitive and have a lot of different kind of looks to art. I love it!

LC – What do you think about ITSLIQUID Platform?
LND –
It is perfect. You can find in simple ways what you are searching for. So it is perfect. And I am sure in the future it will develop to other highlights.
