Luca Curci
talks with Marina Comerio during THE BODY LANGUAGE 2022, at THE ROOM Contemporary Art Space.

I’m Marina Comerio, I was born in Milan in 1977. I started studying drawing and painting as I needed to give a sense to all that I had inside. I have been attending Santo Nania painter’s studio for seven years and then I started finding my own personal way to express myself. I crossed some physiological steps of artistic growth: starting from the pure description of reality, going through the research of sentiments and inner moods and ultimately representing beauty through shape and use of color. In a nutshell, in art, I allow myself just to follow my needs as a child or as a primitive person hoping to leave a mark on my transition on earth.

Luca Curci – Are your artworks focused on a specific theme?
Marina Comerio –
At the moment I’m mostly working on the form and its aesthetic meaning as well as its importance in art. I receive a lot of fulfilment in a harmonious shape or in a color scheme.

LC – How is being an artist nowadays?
MC –
I think that being an artist nowadays is a very difficult challenge. There are a lot of pitfalls and it’s not always easy to recognize a good opportunity or an interesting collaboration. Pandemic made it all even more complicated. The web saved a lot of events but on the other hand, we have lost touch with the public and it’s like lifeblood to me.

LC – How did you get to your current artistic practice?
MC –
I have arrived at this point of my journey through art after a lot of physiological steps, I think: the first approach through the representation of reality, then the discovery of feelings and the effort to explain them through images, words, objects all put together in a sort of case and now the fulfilment through the simple sense of beauty that only shapes and colors can give if well mixed. I just follow my sense of aesthetics. I usually start from a shape and I try to approach it to color like a harmonious dance through them, using simple materials, trying not to overburden the final effect, keeping the result as clear and essential as possible.

LC – How do you feel when you see your work completed?
MC –
When I see my work completed I feel fulfilled, I physically benefit from the final result, I perceive the sense of beauty and completeness as a real physical effect.

LC – In which way the artwork presented in our exhibition is connected with the exhibition’s theme? Can you explain something about your piece?
MC –
The title of your exhibition was “the body language” but my idea was also influenced by the name of your main project (itsliquid group). Therefore the first image that came up to my mind was a fluid silhouette of a sinuous body hidden in a dark shadow, a lightning line more than a tridimensional shape, an idea of a body more than a concrete figure, something floating more liquid than touchable.

LC – What do you think about ITSLIQUID Platform?
MC –
I think that ITSLIQUID platform is a really efficient way to spread art and promote artists to the best.

LC – Did you enjoy cooperating with us?
MC –
I hope this first collaboration will follow others with the same mental involvement. Having a theme to describe with my artworks is a challenge and a goal to reach. I personally don’t appreciate simple collective exhibitions, by far I prefer a theme to follow also in order to have a huge interchange among artists, the public, and their points of view. By now I’m happy to have started this collaboration with you in Venice one of the richest cities of art in history. To me, this is a great opportunity to promote my job next to other artists, a wonderful experience that will surely enrich my path.
