Interview: Marion Laborde
Luca Curci talks with Marion Laborde during VENICE INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR 2020 at THE ROOM Contemporary Art Space and at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello.
“I’m a french artist based in the south-west of France. I completed my studies in France in the Beaux-Arts and in Lisbon in the Faculdade de Belas-Artes. Regionalism is a key component of my work; the source of my inspiration derives from a world on the fringe, and all its traditional ways of life, that are gradually disappearing. Poetry is a thread that runs through all of my work. It is transcribed as a testimony to different traditions. I shine a light on what surrounds us and elevates it to a work of art. I strive to make us aware of the art that emanates from our gestures, our customs, our habits”.
Luca Curci – What’s your background? What is the experience that has influenced your work the most?
Marion Laborde – I am a French artist from Pau in the South West of France. I graduated from the Ecole supérieure d’Art des Pyrénées in Pau, and from the Ecole supérieure d’Art du Nord Pas de Calais in Tourcoing. I have always been interested in customs, accents, and life around me. After moving to the North of France for my studies, I was able to take a step back on the wealth of my region and work around it. I travel quite regularly, and in traveling I find a way to open up to culture, to discover new ways of doing things, languages, and all of this helps me in my work. I believe my greatest influence is being in contact with elderly people in retirement houses, talking with them, listening to their stories. It is certainly with these encounters that I developed my artistic sound practice, and the desire to keep a memory.
LC – Which subject are you working on?
ML – I work on immersive projects that plunge viewers into questioning the perception of the world around us. I use sound as a means of linking my work, making them respond and creating coherence. The out of range sound interests me, questions, and leaves room for the imagination. The world and people on the fringes of society interest me; I try through my work to put them back at the center. I am currently exploring transmission, language and customs which tend to disappear.
LC – Where do you find your inspiration?
ML – The heart of my work is undoubtedly my birthplace: its land, its identity, its customs. My family also influences me enormously, they were a source of inspiration when I first started researching, exploring my interests, and exploitable for my work. I also find my inspiration in everyday and manufactured objects, as well as from the fringes of society and try to highlight and underline what surrounds us.
LC – How is being an artist nowadays?
ML – Being an artist today means expressing yourself, thinking, saying, creating… being free to assume your positions and your convictions. To try to flourish as much as possible in your artistic practice and to reach out to others, to elsewhere.
LC – Which art themes do you pursue? What is your preferred subject, if there is any?
ML – I continue to work on pieces combining sound installations, videos and photos. My current interests are in transmission, regionalism, and language. I continue to explore this subject and trying to do so in line with the current climate, which is not easy, to be as close as possible to people.
LC – We were attracted by your last artistic production, has the artwork presented been created for the festival or as a part of preexisting works?
ML – The works presented had been carried out before the festival.
LC – Do you agree with our vision of art and what do you think about the theme of the festival?
ML – I agree with your vision of art, and above all your openness to exhibit several artists with different universes and create harmony in the different pieces, which were in line with the theme.
LC – What do you think about ITSLIQUID Platform?
ML – I think that ITSLIQUID Platform is a very good way to give visibility to artists from all over the world and make them coexist.
LC – Do you think ITSLIQUID GROUP can represent an opportunity for artists?
ML – ITSLIQUID group is a real opportunity for artists from all over the world to be able to show their work in places as prestigious as Venice, where culture holds a very important place.
LC – Did you enjoy cooperating with us?
ML – I really valued cooperating with you, you were very attentive and caring. The exchange was smooth and I would love to work with you in the future if we get the chance. It was a real pleasure to meet you in Venice.
