Interview: Marry Ann Delani
Luca Curci talks with Mary Ann Delani during the 17th edition of VENICE INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR 2023, at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello in Venice.
Mary Ann Delani is a French abstract and expressionist artist based in Ireland. She graduated from Applied art in 2014 and worked as a multidisciplinary designer for several years. However, her artistic journey began earlier, in 2009, as a quest to understand and express the invisible aspects of existence. Mary Ann Delani’s intuitive illustrations emerge from fluid strokes of black ink or paint on a pristine white surface. From a single black dot, her work unfolds, while intangible emotions and thoughts flow freely on the surface. Her creations serve as windows into landscapes of emotions and consciousness, revealing both shadows and light that reside within. Each piece emerges from a connection with the inner: Mary Ann Delani delves into deep emotions and thoughts, surrendering to the unforeseen. Her work is a journey to discover personal truths and uncover oneself, a constant pursuit of the authenticity that lies within. Viewers are invited to connect not only with their eyes but with their souls, interpreting her art through their own life experiences. “Focus on what you feel, not what you see.”

Luca Curci – What is the trigger that leads you to paint?
Mary Ann Delani – Emotions. My art is an extension of my inner state of being. Emotion creates in me an urge for expression, introspection and discovery of true selfness. It’s a need to ‘Let it go’.
LC – Which artists have somehow influenced your work?
MD – Pierre Soulages. If our techniques differ, our philosophy is the same. Pierre Soulages once said: “If Painting doesn’t offer a way to dream and create emotions, then it is not worth it. Painting isn’t just pretty or pleasant, it is something that helps you stand alone and face yourself” I vividly recall the first time I found myself in front of one of Pierre Soulages’ paintings: The outside world became silent, and I truly was with myself facing the mirror that absorbed and reflected the light as well as my thoughts and feelings.- I have created each artwork with this same feeling since.

LC – How is your creative process?
MD – It is highly intuitive. It always starts with a feeling and the states of mind associated with it. And the need to explore it. Sometimes this need lasts several weeks or days before I can start an artwork. Sometimes only a few minutes. Each artwork starts with a single black dot, a sort of opening between my inner world and the pristine surface. Then the outside world shuts down, and I let my hand go freely, intuitively, following what happens inside. There are lines, shapes, and strokes, and there is black. I always use black: I haven’t found a more authentic shade. Black is Black, it doesn’t lie.
LC – Are your artworks focused on a specific theme?
MD – The recurring theme of my art is Life – Life on a subconscious level. I go beyond what can be seen, where real life happens – the life of feelings and thoughts that happen in our mind and soul. And I want people to feel this dimension of their lives. My art is about the invisible and intangible aspects of Life: feelings, thoughts and consciousness.

LC – How is being an artist nowadays?
MD – Full of opportunities. Opportunities to share our work, to exchange about art, and to discover more and more every day.

LC- What is the message linked to the artwork you have shown in this event? How is it connected to the theme of the entire exhibition?
MD – My artworks, like the exhibition, explore the unlimited boundaries of the mind and soul and their independent relationship from the outer environment of time and space. Reminiscence is about time. About thoughts and feelings from the past. If the body remains in the present, the mind and the soul have unlimited access to memories regardless of the time and space of our outside environment. Flourishing is about the inner blossoming of oneself, independently from the limits, circumstances and situations that exist in the outside environment.

LC – We were attracted by your last artistic production, has the artwork presented been created for the exhibition or as a part of preexisting works?
MD – Both Artworks were part of preexisting works. Reminiscence is part of an ongoing series which explores time limitless on a subconscious and soul level. Flourishing is part of the series Inner answers which is a set of contemplations and insights from the true self.

LC – Did you enjoy cooperating with us?
