Interview: Mika Qatsi

 

Luca Curci talks with the artist Mika Qatsi during CONTEMPORARY VENICE – ARCHITECTURES OF IDENTITIES in Venice.

Mika Qatsi was born in Verona in 1965, video maker since 2004 has assets of hundreds of videos with different themes. He was co-founder of the movement sincromediale, a group of international artists who prefers the use of several media in contemporary. As multimedia artist and video performer he prefers show his works in museums.

 

Luca Curci – Which are your artistic projects for the future? Is there any possibilities for a new participation in some Italian exhibitions?
Mika Qatsi – My artistic production is now directed to a precise and spontaneous overview of reality where nothing seems to happen, a choice dictated to suggest a closer look at what surrounds us, in sharp contrast to overdose of exceptionality that there is daily administered by a media bombardment that makes us insensitive to the details.

L. C. – What do you think about the concept of CONTEMPORARY VENICE – ARCHITECTURES OF IDENTITIES? In which way did inspire you?

M. Q. – CONTEMPORARY VENICE is a complex concept, abstract and at the same timeb very concrete that can be interpreted in various ways. It ‘s just its complexity and facets that have inspired my work.

 

L. C. – Are you satisfied of this experience?
M. Q. – Yes, I found the experience interesting.

 

L. C. – What do you think about the organization of CONTEMPORARY VENICE -ARCHITECTURES OF IDENTITIES?
M. Q. –The event was well organized as always.

L. C. – What is your idea about It’s Liquid Group?
M. Q. – Events organized by Liquid Group are good opportunities for an artist to exhibit in interesting and prestigious places.

 

L. C. – Are you interested in future collaborations with our organization?
M. Q. – Yes, I’m interested in all your proposals that are in tune with the issues that I am developing.

I am looking for abstract compositions in my surroundings to capture them photographically. The objects and situations are neither changed, arranged nor manually illuminated, nor are they subsequently edited on the computer, even the detail is identical to the shot. All pictures are 'Pure Photography'. I see my surroundings as a 'natural exhibition space'. I find works of art on the pavement, on building walls, in the water and in factory buildings. These works of art are fixations of the moment and therefore difficult to reproduce. A different angle of view, a changed incidence of light, and the colours, bizarrely changed forms have disappeared. Read more
