Interview: Monica Pla
Luca Curci talks with Monica Pla during FUTURE LANDSCAPES, third appointment of BORDERS ART FAIR 2023, held in Venice, at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello.

Monica Pla is a visual artist and an interior designer raised in Barcelona; working in design since 1990, first as a window display designer and from 2006 as an artist and interior designer. She describes herself as a silent poet, intimate researcher, carpenter of illusions, lover of what no one loves, crazy for hours and sane for days. In fact, a survivor in a world that makes it increasingly difficult for us to feel.
Her work is to enhance the essential beauty of spaces and objects, she expresses that beauty is harmony, enjoyment and well-being. It caresses the senses and makes our way easier. Her search goes beyond aesthetics, she looks for the essence of things.

Luca Curci – What are you currently working on?
Monica Pla – I’m working on a new performance, THE BRIDE, the premiere is next October, in Barcelona. It is a critical and ironic piece. I’m working with openness and emotional liberation of old models of relationships in society.

LC – Where do you find your inspiration?
MP – Inspiration comes to me easily. I don’t need to look for inspiration; one material, one thought, one movement that I see on the street could create a feeling inside me and the feeling drives me to create most of the time.

LC – How do you choose your subjects? Is it a reasoned or an instinctive process?
MP – Definitely for me is an instinctive process that is directly connected with my inner process as a person. I use my artwork as a shamanic way of healing by staging my emotional difficulties. I focus my conscience on them which is a way of healing for me.

LC- How do you feel when you see your work completed?
MP – Complete, relaxed, full of love and relaxed once again. For me, everything is about emotions. Mind is only for thinking about how to do it.

LC – What do you think about the concept of this exhibition? How did it inspire you?
MP – Future Landscapes is always my path of work because I’m working in present to be better in future, as I said. So I felt instantly attracted to this concept.

LC – In which way the artwork presented in our exhibition is connected with the exhibition’s theme?
MP – With my performance DONA. I’m working on having more freedom to express my feminity which is indeed a Future Landscape.

LC – Do you think ITSLIQUID GROUP can represent an opportunity for artists?
MP – Absolutely! As new artists, we need experiences and different ways of connecting with the public and it is not easy for us. Your work is necessary and a great opportunity for us.

LC – Did you enjoy cooperating with us?
MP – You lovely ladies helping me in everything, supporting me. I can only have words of gratitude.

Hey, I'm Franka, a creative soul with a diploma in design from Zagreb Faculty of Architecture. My journey has taken me through years of experience in design to becoming CEO and founder of Idearium Lab., a compact design studio where we take your ideas to reality.
