Interview: Neda Matian
Luca Curci talks with Neda Matian during 13th Edition of Contemporary Venice Art Fair, at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello.

An artist who has been deeply touched by the enchanting world of art, it all began when I took my very first professional art class at the age of 11. From that moment, I was captivated by the power of drawing and painting. I enrolled in a professional calligraphy class, which added a new dimension to my art. Calligraphy became the missing piece in my abstract paintings, bringing words and letters to life and adding depth and meaning to my creations. The forms and geometric shapes of letters fascinated me, and I immersed myself in the world of calligraphy, constantly seeking to learn and grow.

My mission as an artist is to create change, to bring beauty into the world, and to leave a lasting mark through my creations. With each stroke of the brush, I invite others to join me on this artistic odyssey, where the possibilities are boundless and the power of self-expression knows no limits. More than 20 years of experience in painting and calligraphy, worked with oil color, acrylic, watercolor, and textile painting.

Luca Curci – What is the trigger that leads you to paint?
Neda Matian – The call of art has been with me since my first professional class at 11. That initial experience ignited a passion for drawing and painting, and since then, every brushstroke has been a response to the enchanting world of art. The freedom within art and its boundless nature are what truly drives me. I cherish the solitude that comes with painting, allowing me to immerse myself in my thoughts for hours. It’s a place where I feel unrestricted, and through painting, I can lose myself in the beauty of uninhibited self-expression.

LC – How much has the city/country in which you grew up/born affected your work as an artist?
NM – The environment I grew up in subtly shapes my work. Cultural nuances and surroundings play a part, adding a silent influence to my artistic perspective.

LC – Which art themes do you pursue? What is your preferred subject, if there is any?
NM – My artistic journey encompasses various themes, starting with landscapes and real objects in oil, and evolving into the vibrant world of abstract art with acrylics. A significant addition to my artistic repertoire is Persian calligraphy, where the elegant forms and geometric shapes of letters captivate me. This infusion of calligraphy adds depth and meaning to my creations, enriching the visual narrative of my work. The exploration of different themes and mediums reflects my commitment to continuous growth and expression.

LC – Do you use art to express something in particular? Is it your medium of expression?
NM – Art is my unfiltered expression, a canvas where I rebel against past professions. Each stroke is a testament to life’s intricate beauty. Art is the only place where there is no fear for me. It’s a realm without limitations, allowing me to move freely. It is where I can be truly authentic. My mistakes lead to something new and more beautiful, and this process of evolution is incredibly rewarding.

LC – Is there an unrealized or unrealizable project, even a crazy one, that you would like to work on?
NM – Within me are dreams waiting to materialize – daring, unconventional projects that defy imagination. The crazy ones are the essence of my creative aspirations.

LC – What is the message linked to the artwork you have shown in this event? How is it connected to the theme of the entire exhibition?
NM – Each artwork carries a whisper of my soul, harmonizing with the exhibition theme. It leaves an indelible mark on the observer’s psyche.

LC – What do you think about the concept of this exhibition? How did it inspire you?
NM – The exhibition’s concept draws me into a realm where artistic boundaries crumble. It inspires a daring exploration into uncharted territories of creativity.

LC – What are your suggestions about our services? Is there something more we can provide to artists?
NM – A supportive platform that fosters collaboration, skill refinement, and exposure would be invaluable.
