Interview: Romana Jelinkova
Luca Curci
talks with Romana Jelinkova during CONTEMPORARY VENICE 2021, at THE ROOM Contemporary Art Space.

Romana grew up in Czech Republic under the communist regime, her artistic journey intertwined with the political history to which people had to cope with. She was unable to study art during the school years, as she wished. The change occurred following the Velvet Revolution (1992) when the situation changed and she founded her own international photo agency. A few years later painting burst into her life becoming an integral part of her life until the present day. Action, movement and the choice of blue as the main color define her own language. All these features tell of a gained artistic universe, strongly desired, which through the use of blue manages to better express her own thoughts. Spontaneity underlies her way of painting and the use of acrylic color allows her to support this aspect. The choice of monochromatic shows the interest in traditional Eastern painting and calligraphy. (Text by Laura Francesca Di Trapani, art curator).

LUCA CURCI – What is art for you?
ROMANA JELINKOVA
– For me, art and creation mean an attitude to life. Not to be seduced by established rituals and forms, but to work your own way to your own knowledge, to deeply feel seemingly ordinary situations and to try to find your own solutions, combinations and, finally, the expression of what you have experienced.

LC – What’s your background?
RJ
– I began to devote myself fully to painting relatively late in my life, and even if I have studied classical painting, I think my work has been greatly influenced by my study of eastern style of painting such as calligraphy, Sumi-e and the New York School, especially the action and gestural painting.

LC – Which is the role the artist plays in the society? And contemporary art?
RJ
– As we know, It is difficult to determine who is really an artist. Therefore, let’s rather talk about art, which creates the identity of society, promotes aesthetic feeling, brings new impulses, mediates social interaction, is a distinctive record of history, and also explores the creativity of each viewer, reader or listener. In my opinion, modern art is greatly influenced by the global environment and rapidly changing external impulses. Especially beginning artists, however, have to deal with the need to present their works primarily through technology, which can weaken or distort the effect of their works of art.

LC -Where do you find your inspiration?
RJ
– Energy is important for me. Therefore, my inspiration can be anything that catches my attention. It can be a light in some landscapes as well as an unusual shape of stone; it can be a dialog or music. These perceptions can be positive as well as negative. I feel and analyze them, and then I try to capture this experience on canvas or paper.

LC – What is the most challenging part about creating your artworks?
RJ
– Balance between concentration and spontaneity. I don’t want my paintings to be too thoughtful or contrived, but they need to have certain rules and at the same time emotional freedom.

LC – Do you agree with our vision of art and what do you think about the theme of the festival? In which way the artwork presented in our exhibition is connected with the festival’s theme?
RJ
– The theme of the festival corresponds to my way of painting. Both exhibited paintings belong to the series with the title Moment. This is because the images have always been created at a certain uninterrupted period of time and thus capture the mood of my mind, soul and body at that given unique moment.

LC – Did you enjoy cooperating with us?
RJ
– Despite advanced technologies, the physical experience of an artwork is irreplaceable and the only true one, therefore, I believe that organizing exhibitions are extremely important for both authors and viewers too. For this reason, I am grateful to the ITSLIQUID GROUP for the opportunity to exhibit my paintings in Venice.

LC – What are your suggestions about our services? Is there something more we can provide to artists?
RJ
– I think it’s extremely difficult to organize exhibitions or art competitions at the moment, so I don’t have any recommendations.

LC – What is your idea about ITSLIQUID GROUP?
RJ
– As I had the opportunity to learn, the ITSLIQUID GROUP is an ambitious organization made up of a group of very positive people and therefore I am convinced that its activities will continue to develop.
