Interview: RON MILLER
Luca Curci talks with Ron Miller during THE BODY LANGUAGE at Palazzo Ca’ Zanardi and during THE EXTENDED BODY at THE LINE Contemporary Art Space.
RON MILLER – urban concept art from Berlin. This is Marcus Klüh and Ronny Kindt. Knowing each other since kindergarten, Klüh and Kindt’s passion to create art started early during their adulthood with creating bicycles, motorbikes and helmets. The two multidisciplinary working artists follow their very own aesthetics: with a style of paste-ups, collages, graffiti tags, and a special lacquer and brush technique they design and create canvases, objects or even whole rooms. Repetitive RON MILLER motives are the geisha, their motto FUCK FAME or the “Heimat” – topic which the two artists reinterpret according to their very own rules – making every RON MILLER a unique piece of art. Well-known brand cooperations have kept them on the map, with Klüh and Kindt proving their artistic talent at VOGUE Fashion’s Night and at GQ – Men of The Year Awards, among others. With each new opportunity came the approval of celebrity invitees: Wolverine-representative Hugh Jackman, Jamie Foxx, Gerard Butler, Jamie Dornan and Kate Hudson are among the well-known owners of pieces by RON MILLER. In 2018, their renowned exhibitions followed suit, including Wandelism, Monumenta, Urban Art Week, ARTMUC, Stroke Art Munich and the Milan Design Week. In addition, they opened their own Berlin exhibitions “MAD & BED” and “TRIP” last summer. From opening a pop-up gallery in Frankfurt to being part of the Milan Design Week, the two RON MILLERs strive to take on only projects they can completely identify with and therefore dedicate themselves to. Klüh and Kindt have started their “TRIP” in Berlin, have travelled throughout Germany to Italy, the UK and the United States until it will take them to Asia in 2020.
Luca Curci – What is art for you?
RON MILLER – For us, art is a space in which we can express ourselves without any convention.
LC – What are you currently working on?
RM – We are currently working on our new exhibition “TRUE HEROINES. Fuck Fame” which opens at the Key Gallery in Milan in May. Our images are shaped by the anonymized image of the geisha. It symbolizes our hidden longings. For the new exhibition, our Geisha takes on the role of female activists, entrepreneurs as well as strong women and celebrates them as superheroines.
LC – Which is the role the artist plays in the society? And the contemporary art?
RM – We don’t see us in any role. We want to show the world our idea of aesthetics and, through our art make it a little bit more beautiful. That’s it. Fuck Fame.
LC – Where do you find your inspiration?
RM – We take our inspiration from our daily impressions and experiences. What we see is charged with our own projections. What you see from us is for your own emotions and thoughts. With heart and feelings, we present to you our version of everyday life.
LC – Are your artworks focused on a specific theme?
RM – Recurring motifs are the geisha and the “Fuck Fame” slogan, which is an allusion to our fame-addicted society. Since the beginning of our artistic work, we also deal with the subject of home, our own home and the concept of home as a whole.
LC – In which way the artwork presented in our exhibition is connected with the festival’s theme?
RM – At the festival, we show works in which our geisha is shown in strong poses and gestures. Once she dances like a ballerina, in other works she is a boxer or is tied up in ropes. Her body language speaks for itself and influences the entire visual language of a work.
LC – Do you agree with our vision of art and what do you think about the theme of the festival?
RM – The ITSLIQUID Group’s vision of an international art community is extremely future-oriented. The topic of THE BODY LANGUAGE fits perfectly with our works because especially with body language we are able to illustrate the various roles of our geisha figure.
LC – What do you think about ITSLIQUID Platform?
RM – ITSLIQUID is an innovative and interdisciplinary platform combining art, fashion, architecture and design. Added to this, is the network of exhibition venues all over the world, which is why we too have become aware of ITSLIQUID and are happy to be part of THE BODY LANGUAGE and other projects of the group.
LC – Did you enjoy cooperating with us?
RM – We really enjoyed the cooperation! The communication was always fast, professional and the team works very competently and with full commitment. We are currently planning our next joint project. Stay tuned!
LC – What are your suggestions about our services? Is there something more we can provide to artists?
RM – ITSLIQUID Group offers a wide range of different services for artists who are planning exhibition projects or art events. Another service could be the support with gallery acquisitions for up-and-coming artists.
