Interview: Shiqi Xu
Luca Curci
talks with Shiqi Xu, during the 10th edition of LONDON CONTEMPORARY ART FAIR, at ELEMENTS Contemporary Art Space in London.

Shiqi Xu is a womenswear/couture designer based in New York City. She graduated with honours from the Parsons School of Design in 2023. Shiqi loves delving into her own stories and emotions, analyzing how social issues impact individual behaviour to find design inspiration. Her design language is romantic and poetic. She sees designing a collection as akin to writing a poem – delicate, subtle, yet leaving a lingering aftertaste. Having lived and studied in various locations worldwide, including London, New York, and Shanghai, Shiqi values the traditions and culture of her Chinese background. She enjoys experimenting with different materials and traditional crafts, transforming them into modern fashion. As a graduate who received the Dean’s Scholarship from Parsons School of Design for four consecutive years, she has worked for top brands, including Dior and Celine. Her designs have gained recognition in major fashion publications such as CFDA Runway 360, Vogue, and Not Just a Label. These experiences have contributed to her developing a well-rounded understanding of luxury fashion.

Luca Curci – We were attracted by the project you have shown, has it been created for the festival or is it a part of preexisting works?
Shiqi Xu –
The film showcased at the festival is actually a compilation from my previous fashion collections. I always aim for a certain narrative in my fashion designs, intending for the audience to perceive the messages and ambience I wish to convey. Thus, I filmed these short clips. Currently based in New York, when I learned about this festival’s call for video submissions, I knew it was an excellent opportunity for artists like us who are based far away.

LC – When has your practice been founded?
SX-
My practice was established during my college years. However, I always endeavoured to push myself to exceed the expectations set by my professors, laying a solid foundation for a seamless transition into the real fashion and art industry after graduation.

LC – What’s your background? What is the experience that has influenced your work the most?
SX –
I was born and raised in China. I graduated from Parsons School of Design Fashion Design BFA in 2023. Since my college days, I’ve been in New York for almost 5 years now. The energy of New York, with its fast-paced urban lifestyle, influenced my focus on functional yet chic pieces that seamlessly transition from day to night. Besides, I once studied for a short period at Central Saint Martins. In London, I immersed myself in the city’s avant-garde fashion scene, where I developed an appreciation for unconventional styles and experimental design elements. Also, I’ve been working in Shanghai for a short time. Shanghai is a fusion of tradition and modernity, which inspired me to blend classic craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics. The multiculturalism embedded in these cities has infused my designs with a rich tapestry of influences, resulting in collections that resonate globally while telling a story that reflects the intersections of cultures and experiences.

LC – How would you describe your style?
SX –
feminine, elegant, poetic and romantic. I see designing a fashion collection as akin to writing a poem-delicate, subtle, yet leaving a lingering aftertaste.

LC – Are you concerned about environmental and social sustainability in your buildings? If so, what role does green building play in your work?
SX –
Yes, I prioritize environmental and social sustainability. It’s crucial to acknowledge the irreversible effects fast fashion has on the world and aim for true sustainability. As a fashion designer, I believe we bear a responsibility to educate our customers. Personally, I consistently utilize biodegradable fabrics in the manufacturing process and incorporate upcycling throughout my design process to promote sustainability.

LC – What do you think about our organization of the event?
SX –

It’s evident that a lot of effort and attention to detail went into planning, and it made for a highly enjoyable and successful experience for everyone involved.
