Interview: Simona Catelli
Luca Curci talks with Simona Catelli, during the 16th Edition of VENICE INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR 2022, at Palazzo Bembo.

“My big passion for figurative art, after my studies, has never run out and it has been an important “pillar” in my life, it inspired me and led my personal journey. The artist’s battle with their emotions, and wanting to try to recreate them is really difficult, sometimes we are not completely satisfied with the result and it happened to me too. What I create is deliberately a set of artistic images, sketched figurative details, constructive lines, lights and shadows, and lines and details of light. They are never complete figures and the colors that complete the work are never realistic but represent a set of emotions, or they are meticulously studied to involve the sensitivity and soul of the observer”.

Luca Curci – How did you get to your current artistic practice?
Simona Catelli – My artistic career is dictated by a personal need. I understood that it would be what I wanted to do all my life since I was very little (middle school). I attended art school and since then I have never abandoned figurative art. I was always drawing for anyone who asked me, and it involved me completely This passion has grown over time. I have participated in small neighbourhood exhibitions to the exhibition in the city of Treviso, I have collaborated with various companies for graphic works, and it has allowed me to try my hand at drawing programs, also bringing me closer to the digital world. To this day it continues to be a constant impulse and need, which allows me to express my personal emotions, and it also helps me on a social level, because it stimulates me to grow and evolve myself both professionally and socially.

LC – What are your thoughts while you paint? Do you have any habits or rituals while you work?
SC – while I paint I immerse myself completely in the image that I would like to reproduce, sensations… emotions resurface… they are images that arrive during the day… like flashes… they accompany me all the time. They are always present, very clear and defined, almost real, and if I let myself be carried away I can find them again. There are “moments” that are so strong and deep that they last for whole nights… hours… they fly quickly… they escape… and the darkness turns into sunlight.

LC – How is being an artist nowadays?
SC – these days it is difficult to pursue a career as an artist, few really succeed. In some cases, social networks facilitate, if applied correctly it’s a means of advertising, an excellent form of dissemination, and, why not, the possibility of being known professionally.

LC – Do visitors’ suggestions enrich yourself and your art?
SC – The advice of visitors, of those who observe, is always useful and constructive advice. They allow us to understand what our work transmits to them that they are not emotionally involved, like us artists, but that they only perceive the sensations of the work in front of them.

LC – Did your style change over the years? In which way?
SC – What I feel as an artist, with my emotions and wanting to create it is very difficult. We are never satisfied with the result and so it was for me too. My personal style has been defined over the years and with continuous research.

LC – We were attracted by your last artistic production, has the artwork presented been created for the exhibition or as a part of preexisting works?
SC – This work existed from shortly before this event. I recreated it because I felt the need to communicate a feeling that was resurfacing in my thoughts, persistently, and I wanted to present it on this occasion.

LC – Do you agree with our vision of art and what do you think about the theme of the exhibition?
SC – I am very interested in your vision of art and in events like this, since there are many artists in the exhibitions, in big cities, they attract people’s attention and turn the spotlight on us artists, thus giving us the possibility to express ourselves, to grow, and allow us to excite and be satisfied.

LC – Did you enjoy cooperating with us?
SC – Yes, I really liked it, it will surely be the beginning of many others.

LC – What do you think about ITSLIQUID Platform?
SC – ITSLIQUID is an excellent platform that is always evolving and constantly moving.

LC – What do you think about the organization of our event?
SC – The organizers and the organization were very professional, and complete, both from the point of view of the opening event and from the point of view of advertising and sponsorship event that was very popular, and that captured the attention.
