Interview: Spyros Domazakis
Luca Curci
talks with Spyros Domazakis during FUTURE LANDSCAPES, second appointment of the 19th edition of VENICE INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR 2024, at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello.

Spyros Domazakis was born in Athens. He studied Law, initially at the University of Rome, and then at the University of Athens. During his studies in Athens, he worked in a shipping company in the Law department. His artistic concerns did not let him settle in Law and he abandoned his studies and work in this direction. He attended a Film Seminar at the Hellenic-American Union for 6 months and then enrolled and graduated from the Evgenia Hadjikou Film School. He worked as an Assistant Director in Television (serials, commercials, video clips), and in Cinema (long and short films). He directed a short film, Commercials and Music Videos. His love for music brought him to the Radio, where he wrote and performed 45 hour-long shows, on Athens 9.84, entitled “Jazz stories in Jazz rhythms”.

Luca Curci – According to you, what makes a good photo? Which details do you focus on?
Spyros Domazakis –
A good photograph is one that narrates meanings in an imaginative way. I focus on the light, the balance of my frame, the rhythm and the atmosphere.

LC – When you take photos, are you usually inspired by the situation or do you find inspiration in yourself?
SD –
The inspiration comes from a situation that I have been thinking about for some time. It is important for me to get to the idea and then to the form to express it.

LC – What issues do you intend to deal with in the future?
SD –
I am currently preparing a photobook of my recent work, some of which you saw in the exhibition ITSLIQUID – Future Landscapes. The album will be named Mythologies – A Photographic Choreography.

LC – How do you feel when you see your work completed?
SD –
If I have reached the desired result, a feeling of fullness, rest. Then I want to share it, understand and learn more through the impressions of others.

LC – What is the most challenging part about creating your artwork?
SD –
I think the challenge is to test my limits. Art is a ceremony where you try new things and through which you can come out different.

LC – Do you agree with our vision of art and what do you think about the theme of the exhibition?
SD –
Ι agree with your perspective and the themes given in your reports because these can be interpreted in many ways and aesthetic approaches.

LC – In which way the artwork presented in our exhibition is connected with the exhibition’s theme?
SD –
The ancient landscapes presented are for us contemporaries a model. Looking back we are building the future. Rhythm, moderation, harmony are values upon which the landscapes of the future are built.

LC – What do you think about the organization of our event?
SD –
Everything was done on time with proper planning and the design and curation of the exhibition were professionally made.
