Luca Curci
talks with Torhild Frøydis Eid during CONTEMPORARY VENICE 2021 – THE SECRET GARDEN, at Misericordia Archives.

“My name is Torhild Frøydis Eid. I am born in 1961 in Kristiansand, currently living in Son in the south-eastern part of Norway. I used to work as a navy officer, yet the service was getting increasingly demanding, I chose to leave. My inner voice urged me to explore and process things. As a result, I turned to paint and mindfulness. I have become a very passionate painter, and I love to experiment with colours, textures and techniques. I always aim at creating high-quality artworks and improving my skills, especially in acrylic abstract painting and mixed media techniques. I find inspiration in my daily life and in my dreams. The animals, the sea, the sky, the Light and also the music are my sources of inspiration. In my paintings, I seek to transfer my inner sensations and what I see for “my inner eye” to the canvas. While the music is playing – I surrender and I let the brush intuitively play over the canvas – especially when it comes to non-figurative paintings. The result is often unexpected, even to myself! My overall desire is to spread joy and good vibrations in a world in chaos and with great challenges. I also want to awake and to remind the observer of all the beauty in life. To appreciate what life has to offer even in small everyday things. We often search for something else, somewhere else…I want my paintings to give the observer moments of joy, just to breath, and just be here and now”.

LUCA CURCI – What is art for you?
TORHILD FRØYDIS EID
– Art is my great passion! Being creative, expressing my inner feelings, my sensory impressions and my experiences on canvas are both challenging and exciting. Experiencing the art of others, visiting exhibitions and being in an art community is also very important.

LC – What’s your background? What is the experience that has influenced your work the most?
TFE
– I was an officer in the navy for many years. In my service, I experienced tough things. Now, painting has become Important therapy for both processing and curing. To be at sea, knowing the forces of nature. The changing weather, from quiet to storm influences my work the most. Several of my artworks have the sea as the main source of inspiration. My color palette goes mainly in blue and turquoise, and the complementary color is orange.

LC – Where do you find your inspiration?
TFE
– My sources of inspiration are the sea, the sky, the light, nature, and animals. The music and lyrics “give species to the painting”.

LC – How do you feel when you see your work completed?
TFE
– Often surprised! My painting is often controlled by my emotions. I try not to think of any result, I try to stay as long as I can in the creative process, enjoying myself. In the end, it may be necessary to some final adjustments. My gut feeling tells me when it is time to finish! Often it simply “clicks into place”! I love the feeling!

LC – Do you use art to express something in particular? Is it your medium of expression?
TFE
– I try my best to focus on the positive sides of life. Use all my senses, to be present at the moment. My desire is to convey what I experience, through my painting. In a way, I want to awake the observer, and to remind him/her of all the beauty in life!

LC – In which way the artwork presented in our exhibition is connected with the exhibition’s theme?
TFE
– My painting “The Blue Swan” is being showcased at the exhibition “The Secret Garden”. The painting is abstract, but there is a lot to discover. “It is the eye that sees”, I would say there are several hidden secrets if you take your time to study it more closely.

LC – Can you explain something about the artworks you have in our exhibition?
TFE
– The painting “The Blue Swan” is 100 x100 cm, Deep Edge cotton canvas. Acrylic paint. “The Blue Swan”, was for the first time showcased in a virtual Exhibition at M.A.D.S Milano, Italy in December 2020. The artwork has also received “Runner up Certificate” in an International art contest by Artavita, USA, (2020) and “Honorable Mention Award” in an International art contest by “Circle Foundation of Arts”, France (2021).

LC – Do you think ITSLIQUID GROUP can represent an opportunity for artists?
TFE
– I feel very honored, grateful and happy being invited and given this great opportunity to participate in the exhibition. It is a whole new arena and I hope it will help me to reach out and delight more people with my art!
