Interview: Trude Kjolen
Luca Curci talks with Trude Kjolen during VISIONS, third appointment of CANVAS CONTEMPORARY ART FAIR, at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello.

I am a Norwegian painter based in Spain. I was born in Drammen, Norway, in 1975. I have always had an interest in art and have been spiritually inclined. I was encouraged to start painting at an early age, but a death in the family caused me to lose hope and interest in art for a long time. In 2019, after learning about my former art interest and my loss of motivation, my son went out and bought me paints and canvas for Christmas. He encouraged me to start again.

In my younger years, I studied art at an art school in Norway and had Bruce Naigls as my mentor for a long time. After a 25-year break, when I started painting again, I met Jarl Goli, who became a friend and mentor to me. Now, I have had the opportunity to display my art in Spain, Japan, the USA, and Italy. I am proud to have been awarded the Leonardo da Vinci International Prize and recognized as one of the top 60 masters in the USA. Additionally, I have received the Pegasus Art Prize and have been included on the list of the 50 best art investments for 2023.

Luca Curci – How did you get to your current artistic practice?
Trude Kjolen – mainly from my own practice, training and some schooling in my early years. I have in the later years done different practices with help and tips from other painters.

LC- What are your thoughts while you paint? Do you have any habits or rituals while you work?
TK –
I don’t have any specific rituals. I mainly paint from my feelings and my inner soul is coming to life on my canvas, that is why I have so many different “motives” and styles that can vary from painting to painting. Lots of my inspiration is quite spiritual.

LC – What are the three hashtags essential to define your poetics that you could not give up?
– #spirituell #love #family

LC – Which art themes do you pursue? What is your preferred subject, if there is any?
TK –
Free spirit, free mind, I find inspiration in my spiritual self, I let my free spirit and mind guide my way across the canvase

LC – Do you use art to express something in particular? Is it your medium of expression?
TK –
Yes, my art is an expression of my soul. That is why I often have a mask in many of my pictures, because we often, use a mask to hide our true spirit, out of fear of not being accepted.

LC – What do you think about the concept of this exhibition? How did it inspire you?
TK –
The Diversity of both the artists, and the works. I felt many strong expressions in the works displayed.

LC – What is the message linked to the artwork you have shown in this event? How is it connected to the theme of the entire exhibition?
TK –
The mask, is my “coming out” piece. It was one of my first displayed works, where I showed myself to the world as an artist. Peace and love is my belief in people, love and humanity, which I felt was lost for a while. I think we all can do wonders together.

LC – What do you think about the organization of our event?
TK –
In total, I thought it was really great. Lots of great artists in a wonderful venue

LC – Would you suggest a collaboration with us? What do you think about our services?
TK –
This is my first time working with you, and I feel that I would like to get to know you better. And I wish to continue working with you in the future.

LC – Do you think ITSLIQUID GROUP can represent an opportunity for artists?
TK –
I have just this one experience so far, and I hope that this will help me to be able to make a living of my works.
