Interview: Yibao Liang
Luca Curci
talks with Yibao Liang during BODYSPACES, the first appointment of CANVAS ART FAIR 2023, at THE LINE Contemporary Art Space.

I am a London-based Innovation Designer and Creator who graduated from the University of the Arts London with a Master’s degree in Design for Social Innovation and Sustainable Futures, and I also have a Bachelor’s degree in the Art of Digital Media (Interactive Design pathway). My major goal is to make meaningful designs for society, trusting that continuing to create and innovate will make the world a better place. I enjoy exploring and experiencing different jobs and lifestyles. To build a better future, I believe that people should remain curious about all fields and strive to become lifelong learners.

LUCA CURCI – What is art for you?
YIBAO LIANG –
In my opinion, art can be an expression of one’s own views, and feelings, or a manifestation of their imagination of reality. Furthermore, I aspire to create works that resonate with everyone, prompting them to reflect and take action toward making the world a better place. I believe that every artist will enjoy it when making works, be full of energy, and want to transmit their emotions to the audience.

LC – How much has the city/country in which you grew up/born affected your work as an artist?
YL –
I believe that everyone’s beliefs and actions are shaped by their family and social upbringing, as well as their unique cultural background. As someone born in China who travelled extensively during childhood, I am particularly interested in experiencing and learning from diverse cultures. As a result, when working on a project, I tend to consider humanity as a whole rather than just the audience of a single country. However, when creating works related to my country of birth, I can use my native language to research and connect with audiences more authentically. For instance, my postgraduate graduation work focused on topics related to Chinese politics, which resonated with many fellow citizens and received positive feedback. This success is thanks in part to my personal experiences and knowledge of my home country.

LC – Among the several techniques you use, which one do you prefer to practice, and which of them are most compelling for you?
YL –
I enjoy the technique of creating art using fire. My inspiration comes from a pyrotechnic artist named Cai Guo-Qiang, who is not only skilled at creating with pyrotechnics but can even paint with them. I aspire to create my art with special materials as well. Then I realized that fire was an element that I could experiment with and that it could also symbolize global climate change. In the two different versions, I used different methods to express the rebirth of the planet’s plants. This gives me a sense of saving the planet and giving birth to the artwork, which is touching to me.

LC – What do you think about art on social media? Are they turning into the new showcases of contemporary art?
YL –
I believe that social media platforms have become prominent platforms for contemporary art. Social media has become an integral part of people’s lives, and artwork can be showcased on social media through offline and online exhibitions, as well as through audience engagement and marketing efforts. Both artists and exhibition curators often share artwork on their social media pages, which serves as a communication medium for the artwork and helps to disseminate it more widely. In addition to traditional methods of showcasing artwork, such as exhibitions and galleries, new technologies like AR, VR, and NFTs are also being used to digitize artwork. Regardless of the method, social media is a crucial tool for disseminating and promoting artwork and it also means that it is difficult for artworks to leave social media.

LC – What issues do you intend to deal with in the future?
YL –
In the future, I may conceive more artworks using different techniques. I have a wide range of interests, including art, photography, video production, web3, NFTs, and entrepreneurship. I consider myself an experimental person who enjoys exploring different possibilities. I may use my lifestyle as a theme and create artwork using different techniques.

LC – Do you think ITSLIQUID GROUP can represent an opportunity for artists?
YL –
Yes, I often receive emails from ITSLIQUID GROUP calling for works, and I think you provide a lot of opportunities for artists to express themselves.
