Interview: Yukuko Endo
Luca Curci talks with Yukuko Endo during the 8th Edition of ROME INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR, at Monti – Rome Art Space.

“Yukuyuku creates artwork hoping people can walk the long road of life with humor and hope. There are three main types of artwork. One of them is receipt poems. The poems are printed on receipts using a thermal printer. When the customers press a button on “the Receipt Poem Machine”, it prints the poem instantly on the spot and gives it to them. The second is short stories with illustrations. The third is postcards with illustrations and slogans. All works are bilingual in English and Japanese. We explore new creativity using technology and printed items.”

Luca Curci – What are you currently working on?
Yukuko Endo – I’m making a roll paper calendar. It’s not only a very long calendar but also someone’s schedule is already written. You feel like you are living with a fictional character. I think the style is unique so I hope you will like it.

LC – What is art for you?
YE – Peace. Art is one of the expressions of yourself and you can communicate with the world. So, you don’t have to take weapons and rely on violence.

LC – How is your creative process?
YE – Make it, put it out, get feedback, and make it again, repeat and repeat…

LC – Are your artworks focused on a specific theme?
YE – Not particularly, but the receipt poem project has a momentary meaning. Because thermal paper will disappear in a few years.

LC – How is being an artist nowadays?
YE – It’s been three years since I started this activity. I’m gradually expanding my presentation. I’d like to collaborate with some companies in near the future.

LC – In which way the artwork presented in our exhibition is connected with the exhibition’s theme?
YE – So many artists gathered together, so I hope my artwork is accepted as one of free expression.

LC – Can you explain something about the artworks you have in our exhibition?
YE – The music score called “LIFE” is represented as a musical note as a human. Life goes on.

LC – Would you suggest a collaboration with us? What do you think about our services?
YE – Thank you so much for this great opportunity. I hope it inspires someone’s brain.
