Interview: Zequan Chen
Luca Curci talks with Zequan Chen, honourable mention of ITSLIQUID International Contest – 13th Edition.

Zequan Chen, born in Xiamen in October 2010, is 12 years old and a primary school student. At the age of 2, he began to draw graffiti and liked color very much. Since 2016, he began to paint with oil painting and acrylic painting, and has completed nearly 500 artworks. Every time he paints, he can maintain his passion and enjoy it. “Today I am very happy, and I want to paint another one.” This is a sentence he often said after painting.

Luca Curci – What are you currently working on?
Zequan Chen – I am currently studying in primary school.

LC – How did you get to your current artistic practice?
ZC – Currently, just painting and drawing every week is the most important part of my artistic practice.

LC – How is being an artist nowadays?
ZC – Happy to be an artist. Doing art is a part of my life, I’m also learning and playing in a day too.

LC – How do you choose your subjects? Is it a reasoned or instinctive process?
ZC – The subject is not important to me, what is important is my painting practice, which will continuously guide my painting direction. This is an instinctive process.

LC – Are your artworks focused on a specific theme?
ZC – Nowadays I am not care a specific theme, strictly speaking, I will follow the direction where practice drives my art forward. Maybe I will brief stay for a specific theme.
