Interview: Bianca Avanzo e Linda Mazzolini
Luca Curci talks with Bianca Avanzo e Linda Mazzolini during THE BODY LANGUAGE 2020 at Palazzo Ca’ Zanardi.
Linda Mazzolini was born on September 14, 1997. She grew up in a small country town in northern Italy. She has always had a great passion: art. Began with photography, already as a child, then continued attending the artistic high school studying in particular photography and audiovisual. She continued her studies by attending University studying cinema and becoming passionate about the social vision of it. This critical view of this art has been enhanced by a short period abroad at the Universitè Paris Diderot.
Born in August 1997, Bianca Avanzo is based in the small city of Bassano del Grappa (VI). Thanks to her sister, she approached the world of art, making it her greatest concern. She attended a pictorial course at the artistic high school. After her diploma, she moved to Gorizia to attend the Dams university faculty (Discipline delle Arti, della Musica e dello Spettacolo), where she studied cinema.

Luca Curci – What’s your background? What is the experience that has influenced your work the most?
Bianca Avanzo & Linda Mazzolini – We’ve had a very similar path. We both attended, though in different cities, the artistic high school. This has brought us remarkably close to art in all its nuances. We then met at the university, attending the course of cinema Dams in Gorizia. For one year we lived together and during this period we developed the idea of an artistic performance using our body.
LC – Which subject are you working on?
BA & LM – Our subject is the use of the female body and we face it with a subjective point of view, that of two girls living in a society that needs to be awakened.

LC – What is the most challenging part about creating your performance?
BA & LM – Our biggest challenge was to make our idea understandable, because the first performance we did was at home just the two of us, without an audience. While at the exhibition “The Body Language”, we put our reflections in front of other people.
LC – Are your performances focused on a specific theme?
BA & LM – The topic on which we have focused is now, more than ever, current. It can be defined as the use and abuse of the female body, deciding to be its spokesperson.
LC – Which is the role the artist plays in the society? And the contemporary art?
BA & LM – Society is accustomed to the use of continuous images, for this reason the artist has the task of being as radical and innovative as possible. This can be seen from the use of performance, an art form already present since the twentieth century, which often uses its body as an artistic medium. Contemporary art in general has the task of sending a message to the public, highlighting social and political issues that in other areas, outside the world of art, can be neglected or forgotten.

LC – What is the message linked to the performance you have shown in this exhibition? How is it connected to the theme of the entire festival?
BA & LM – The message we want to convey with our performance serves to bring down people’s prejudices towards women and their general view of body use, from violence to the single negative comment. That’s why we decided to use our own bodies as a symbol of provocation.
LC – Do you agree with our vision of art and what do you think about the theme of the festival?
BA & LM – We agree with the idea of art transmitted by ITSLIQUID GROUP, also based on a thematic choice such as that of the body, which allows to create a connection between artists from all over the world, making art a means of communication accessible to everybody.

LC – Do you think ITSLIQUID GROUP can represent an opportunity for artists?
BA & LM – We believe that the choice of artists made by ITSLIQUID GROUP allows to give the voice to a wide range of people, since the organizers do not select the artists only for their experience in the artistic field, but according to the relevance with the topic in question.
LC – What do you think about the organization of our event?
BA & LM – The exhibition has been organized to give time and space to each performer.
LC – Would you suggest a collaboration with us? What do you think about our services?
BA & LM – We want to encourage all those people who would like to express themselves without the fear of challenging themselves. Last but not least, we strongly recommend a collaboration with ITSLIQUID GROUP for the opportunity, that we also had, to meet people from all over the world.
