Interview: Daphna Katzor Laszlo
Luca Curci
talks with Daphna Katzor Laszlo during CONTEMPORARY VENICE 2019 at THE ROOM Contemporary Art Space.

“The works of Daphna Katzor turn a collection of professional photographs from the realms of advertising and journalistic documentary into a unique artistic creation of a different scale and emit fresh messages.” (Ma’ariv, May 2003)

“The works present an illusive reality of relationships combining reality and imagination, fantasy and the everyday.” (N. Levy, Tel Aviv University Museum)

“Anointed with a thin layer of surrealism, Daphna Katzor’s works juxtapose the world of dreams and fabrication with a clear, sharp message: The woman/girl standing alone faces the strong, dominant masculine world that desires her and exploits her for its ceremonies and needs…” (C. Givati, Director of Visual Arts, Natanya Cultural Hall)

Luca Curci – What is art for you?
Daphna Katzor –
Art for me is a means to express my viewpoint and a possibility to influence and create social awareness in my environment for a better world.

LC – What are you currently working on?
DK –
I am currently working on a series influenced by stories of Greek mythology, using a comparison between the mythological symbols and that which they represent, and the reality of those symbols in this day and age.

LC – Where do you find your inspiration?
DK –
I find inspiration in all things: In my personal life and the events I experience, in the social and political reality, and in the artworks of the great masters from the Renaissance and the Baroque.

LC – What is the most challenging part about creating your artworks?
DK –
The challenging part in my artworks is expressing my ideas in a surrealistic and unconventional manner, creating surprise while simultaneously evoking emotion and a yearning for a familiar memory, awakening thoughts and pondering.

LC – Which art themes do you pursue? What is your preferred subject, if there is any?
DK –
My preferred subjects change according to events which I experience in my life and to changes that I go through.

LC – We were attracted by your last artistic production, has the artwork presented been created for the festival or as a part of preexisting works?
DK –
The series which I exhibited at the festival in Venice is part of a larger series which discusses the world and nature changing around us as a consequence of the effects of technology and the modern lifestyle, thoughts and insights concerning the world which we leave for future generations.

LC – What is the message linked to the artwork you have shown in this exhibition? How is it connected to the theme of the entire festival?
DK –
In the creations, I integrate imaginative images of sublime nature with a cold, futuristic urban vista which is slowly taking hold of our world. I am preoccupied with the accelerated processes taking place in our world which affect the environment, the climate, and nature, as well as the future we would like to give our children. Through these works, I would like to have some influence on public opinion for the sake of creating a better future. The works are connected to the theme of the festival by integrating urban life and characteristics into the children living this life and their effect upon them.

LC – Do you think ITSLIQUID GROUP can represent an opportunity for artists?
DK –
Yes, ITSLIQUID can promote artists by introducing them to the international crowd.

LC – Would you suggest a collaboration with us? What do you think about our services?
DK –
I would love to collaborate with you.

LC – What are your suggestions about our services? Is there something more we can provide to artists?
DK –
I think it is possible to improve the communication between the artists and the your representatives. There were times that I made contact asking about exhibiting at the festival or about details concerning the fate of the works after the ending of the exhibition, but I was not answered. I think, it is possible to give artists greater exposure through you using social media and international shows.
