Luca Curci
talks with Tanya Shin during CONTEMPORARY VENICE 2021, at THE ROOM Contemporary Art Space.

“I was born in Voronezh city in Russia on June 30, 1997, but now I live in Moscow. I have always drawn as long as I can remember, as a child I tried to draw, but I was never able to do it well enough. I set a goal for myself that whatever I do in life in the future, I will keep trying. It so happens that painting is not my main occupation, I am an economist and financier in specialty, and this profession requires rationality and good judgement, but I have always found a place in my life for creativity. I started my creative career by creating portraits and illustrations on demand, working as an aqua makeup artist, and I was also interested in makeup in theater and cinema, but I realized that I most enjoyed painting with oil. I also like to experiment with color, texture, shape and composition, so I prefer to work with series. Painting is a way to share feelings and impressions, but for me it is not only the conceptual component of the painting that matters, but also its compatibility with design solutions. In contemporary art I am most attracted to conceptualism, but the aesthetics of the sea and the romantic landscape are also close to me.”

Luca Curci – Which subject are you working on?
Tanya Shin –
I like to experiment, trying myself in different directions. In contemporary art I am most attracted to conceptualism, but the aesthetics of the sea and the romantic landscape are also close to me. The best works are the ones based on stories, travels, impressions, emotions, everything that reminds us of the people, places and events dear to our hearts.

LC – How did you get to your current artistic practice?
TS –
At the moment, I try to devote more time to painting, to take part in exhibitions, to test my capabilities.

LC – Which is the role the artist plays in society? And contemporary art?
TS –
It is difficult to give an unambiguous answer to this question. In modern society, the artist plays the role of a magician who can show both the beauty and the seamy side of the world. Contemporary art reshapes traditional ideas about art, uses new unusual ways of expressing feelings, erasing the lines of right and wrong, reacting to everything that happens in the world, calling to think about certain topics, provoking emotions, both positive and negative.

LC – Are your artworks focused on a specific theme?
TS –
A single style has not yet been worked out, as I think that my creative path is just beginning, and I may well come to this over the years, but in the near future I am unlikely to stop at any particular direction, I like to experiment, to try different things: there is a huge variety of interesting topics to stop at something alone. So I’m on a quest to find different ideas, styles, possibilities. My main task in the eternal inner struggle between perfectionism and chaos is to find the quintessence of beauty and meaning, to combine the incompatible, to show that even a self-taught artist can create works that will resonate in the hearts of viewers.

LC – Do visitors’ suggestions enrich yourself and your art?
TS –
I do what I do, regardless of the opinions of others, however, development lies in interaction with people: positive reviews of my works give an understanding that I am moving in the right direction, and constructive criticism makes me think and try to bring everything to perfection (in my subjective perception).

LC – We were attracted by your last artistic production, has the artwork presented been created for the festival or as a part of preexisting works?
TS –
The work presented at the exhibition, created back in 2017, is part of the MANDALA UNIVERSE series of paintings, consisting of five currently finished works and 11 works in the process of writing.

LC – Do you agree with our vision of art and what do you think about the theme of the festival?
TS –
The theme of the festival is very close to me, in my work I thought about the voiced themes, so I gladly accepted the offer to participate in an exhibition in your gallery.

LC – What do you think about ITSLIQUID Platform?
TS –
I think the ITSLIQUID Platform provides great opportunities for artists working in completely different directions. This is a great chance to see the work of colleagues from different countries, I think it’s really great.

LC – What do you think about the organization of our event?
TS –
A story happened to me: there were some difficulties with the courier company, they let me down, failing to deliver the work on time. Despite the fact that the deadline was still September 17, my work with broken glass was delivered only 2 hours before the opening of the exhibition on September 30! It was urgently prepared and mounted on the wall, so it was ready to open, it’s just incredible, I was sure it was too late. I would like to express my gratitude to the organizers and the entire ITSLIQUID team for an interesting proposal, assistance and feedback at all stages of the exhibition. I would like to express my special gratitude to the coordinator Giulia Spagnuolo for help. I am really glad that I managed to get to the exhibition, it is a pity that I could not attend the opening in person, but apparently everything went at the highest level.

LC – Would you suggest a collaboration with us? What do you think about our services?
TS –
I would be glad to continue to interact with the gallery.
