Interview: Timo Frank
Luca Curci talks with Timo Frank during CONTEMPORARY VENICE 2019 at THE ROOM Contemporary Art Space and during ALCHEMIC BODY 2019 at THE LINE Contemporary Art Space.
Born & raised in Hamburg, living in Berlin since 2002. Stills and moving pictures have always been his passion. He completed his graduation with the advanced technical certificate in graphic & design in 1993 and started a special-effects training in 1998. Working in advertisement in Hamburg and Berlin. In 2003 he became a freelancer for motion design and directing. Timo designed and directed award-winning music-clips and fashion-movies. 10 years ago he started photographing. He exhibited in Hamburg, Leipzig & Berlin. The project he presented at CONTEMPORARY VENICE 2019 and at ALCHEMIC BODY 2019 is the 3rd part of my trilogy Floating/Falling/Impact. The work focuses on the expression of the body in a single moment. It’s the first moment of contact of a falling body but there is no movement, no relation to speed or falling height. You can decide for yourself: is this moment real or a constructed reality? And does this even matter?

Luca Curci – What is art for you?
Timo Frank – Art gives any person the opportunity to express themselves. There is no limitation, you only have be honest to yourself.
LC – What are you currently working on?
TF – I started to work more on video again.

LC – Which is the role the artist plays in the society? And the contemporary art?
TF – Art has to be nothing so there is no role – or millions.
LC – What is the most challenging part about creating your artworks?
TF – For me it’s always the concept. It has to give space for thinking and interpretation.
LC – Did your style change over the years? In which way?
TF – Of course. But I always wanted to work esthetically.

LC – What do you think about the concept of this festival? In which way did it inspire you?
TF – My submission was really spontaneous so I haven’t had the time to come to the festival. I would love to see it one day.
LC – In which way the artwork presented in our exhibition is connected with the festival’s theme?
TF – For me “The alchemic body” fits my concept 100%. That’s why I was so happy to find this festival.
