Layers by David Graas

Layers is a design label founded by Dutch designer David Graas, making 3d printed products that are smart, minimal and outspoken. David Graas studied product design at the Gerrit Rietveld Art Academy in Amsterdam. Since 2004 he works as an independent product designer. Investigating the relationship between functional objects and their users, how these objects are valued and why. Aiming to prolong the lifespan of his designs in an era where the cycle of fashion spins ever faster. Not caring much for “pretty things”, his focus lies with ideas rather than style. Counter attacking the love/hate relationship for the design field with intelligence and humor.

“A 3d printer builds up a product in very thin layers, that are melted together with a laser. Furthermore, every product in our collection tells a little story. A story about our relationship with the products around us, what they mean to us, how we value them and why. It’s these layers of stories that give them their distinct personality. Ultimately we like to see you add your own stories and cherish our products for years to come.”

Screw It is a collection of products reinterpreting the familiar PET bottle in unfamiliar ways. Making clever use of the universal screw top, the 3D printed Screw It connectors transform one or several PET bottles into a vase, a toy truck or a food container. Two other connectors integrate the PET bottle cap instead: the Screw It ring and bracelet. Screw It shows that design does not necessarily mean starting from scratch. There is new meaning and new value to be found in the rubble of the discarded, transforming the seemingly worthless into something unexpectedly precious.
