NAGLEV is an italian brand born from the experience of the Morlin family, that has dealed with outdoor shoes for six generations and is based in Montebelluna, the area where, at the beginning of the XX century, the first hiking boots were produced. Achille Morlin, who is the founder together with his daughter Elettra, bought and relaunched the Garmont brand in the early 90s. NAGLEV wants to be a reaction against the current outdoor market. The inspiring idea is that “technology protects nature”: this is why in all the products the foot is in contact with natural materials for the maximum comfort and is protected by a shell made of technological materials built with no seams and with a one-piece upper.

NAGLEV is the acronym of Natural Glocal Evolution:
nature is the place where humans can experience the authentic well-being and this is why Naglev’s products re-create a natural environment around the foot and are sold inside a recyclable packaging;
– the Morlin family’s tradition and know how concerning outdoor shoes, combined with the latest worldwide technological innovations, generate winning collaborations and a new way of approaching the outdoor world called “glocal”;
– the constantly search of the latest technological innovations concerning materials and shoe construction applied to Naglev’s products follow two main guidelines: no seams and a one-piece upper to make the shoe anatomical and free from weak spots.

UNICO is the first NAGLEV‘s product. Built following the brand’s guiding principles, it combines the strenght of an hiking boot with the agility of a trail running shoe. UNICO is hand-lasted and it is produced in limited volumes to ensure maximum quality. The main idea was to build a shoe with a Kevlar outer shell and a wool inner sock, with a single piece of material, no seams and the foot exclusively in contact with natural materials. UNICO’s aesthetics is at the service of function: every single detail has been designed for a specific aim. The one-piece upper and the TPU rand enhance the product’s strenght while the seamless construction avoids weak spots. The integrated cable speed laces make the shoe anatomical and the rubber outsole is designed for the maximum grip. The wool lining, made as a sock, is built-in to the bottom of the upper but is detached from it in order to allow the moisture elimination. Also the choice of using natural colours and no obvious branding responds to the decision of concentrating on the product’s technical features.

The UNICO‘s minimalist look hides a complex necessarily hand-lasted construction. To be anatomical, the upper is streched over the last, previously covered by a lining made as a sock, and attached to the insole. The upper and the insole are covered by a rand that increases their strenght and gives complete waterproofness. The compression moulded EVA insole is made of two densities to ensure shock absorbtion and flexibility. The sole is a compound of natural rubber and its pattern is studied for the maximum grip in any conditions and terrains. The lace cables, the padding and the reinforcements are all permanently integrated into the upper creating what we call a “sandwich” construction. UNICO combines natural material in its inner part and synthetic materials in its outer parts to grant the shoe the best comfort and performance conditions. The wool sock is for foot’s thermoregulation at any weather conditions and includes a vegetable dyed leather and coconut fiber sole that does not retain sweat or odor. Kevlar, used for the upper, is a synthetic material from the polyamide family, known for its strenght and resistance. By January 2020 the women version of UNICO will be available, with a specific shape studied on the anatomy of the female foot, new colours and a softer shell. NAGLEV products are sold online on www.naglev.com and are currently distributed in some European and extra-European countries.

Bauhaus Chicago: Design in the…

Design | December 30, 2019

In 1933, when the Nazi regime closed down the German Bauhaus, the renowned school’s history of progressive design education seemingly ended, and with it, its innovative synthesis of art, craft, and technology. Yet by the late 1930s, as World War II loomed on the horizon, a number of the school’s notable designers and educators left Europe and found their way to Chicago, taking positions at the New Bauhaus, later the Institute of Design (ID) and the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). As leaders at these institutions, László Moholy-Nagy and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe not only introduced the Bauhaus’s avant-garde ideals to the American Midwest but set about translating them the region's urban spaces, materials, and industries.
