OSTEN – Art on Paper
Ars longa, vita brevis | Art is long, life is short – Hippocrates

OSTEN is an INSTITUTION for MUSEUM and GALLERY ACTIVITIES, Skopje, Macedonia has respect for the past, is active in the present and has plans for the future.
A recognized brand in the area of art, emancipated thought, and liberated creation since 1945, with its experience and influence on the improvement of culture and art, over 70 years OSTEN is a successful organizer of international events: the World Gallery of Cartoons (since 1969), Biennial of Drawing & Biennial of Awarded Artists – that attracts the artists worldwide, educate the wider audience and animate art professionals (curators, theorists, critics and art historians) – all which provide an insight and produce materials that document the development and movements of art in our time.

As always, in the foreground is the DRAWING, which marks the beginning of the whole story, while new forms, narrated through various ways of expression and through diverse media, are further developed. The final product is magic and aims to have you bewitched, tap into your inner world without usurping it, but stirring even for a moment your equilibrium with a fresh idea about discovering and enjoying the world around you.

A WORD FROM THE JURY OF THE OSTEN BIENNIAL OF DRAWING 2018

We, Manos Stefanidis as Chair, and Sonia Abadzieva and Melanie Zefferino as Members of the Jury of the Osten Biennial of Drawing 2018, wish to thank the organization committee for having entrusted us with this honourable duty, and for their professional approach to managing this International biennial. We also thank all artists who sent their works to participate in this edition and contribute to the OSTEN Collection of Drawings. We examined 2,317 works by 868 artists from 61 countries. Not only are we impressed with the extraordinary number of applications received, but also by the many different styles, materials and techniques used by the authors as well as by the high quality of the works. Overall, we could appreciate a high level of artistic achievement.
That made our work very difficult. With thoroughness and intellectual honesty we made every possible effort to select the most outstanding works among those presented by the artists competing for the International Jury Awards. In doing so we followed the principles of OSTEN and, while expressing our personal opinions, we worked closely with one another so as to adopt a collective approach and reach shared or unanimous decisions. We would like to make clear that, as a jury, we thrived in making those decisions based on criteria balancing our appreciation for each artist’s technical skills, poetic awareness, ethics, and aesthetic values.
While congratulating on the winners, we wish to express our regards and thankfulness to all artists who contributed with their works to the Osten Biennial of Drawing 2018.
