Pottery & Poetry

POTTERY & POETRY is a home fashion brand for unique handmade ceramics. Based in Sofia, Bulgaria, their small team of talented artisans creates vibrant tableware that turns daily moments at home into small celebrations. “Every dish you serve can taste better as the process of eating starts with observation”, explains architect Maria Baleva, who embarked on her crafting journey four years ago. First, it was just a personal temptation to express her creativity in a new way through the endless process of improvisation with porcelain forms and glaze colors. A few years into the experiment, her irregular plates and one-of-a-kind sets could be found in homes, restaurants, and cafes all over the world.

The versatile collections of colorful tableware are both items for everyday use and refined art pieces for dressier dinners and special occasions. This perfect balance of utility and art is here to elevate our daily rituals to an aesthetic experience. “I do believe in the maxim that how you spend your days is how you spend your life, so the purpose of pottery & poetry is to make the boring beautiful by sneaking art into everyday routines,” says Maria. Over a decade she was part of FUNKT, a well-recognized studio in Bulgaria, famous for its interior and product designs.

From foodies’ private homes to London’s Liberty, Doha cafes and Paris’s best restaurant for 2023, Pottery & Poetry’s exquisitely crafted ceramics are the beautifying extension of any amateur or professional chef’s vision. Last year holder of Two Michelin Stars chef Bruno Verjus made a special request for Ocean Creatures bowls for one of his special dishes. Then he earned the highest new entry in The World’s 50 best restaurants, placing his Table by Bruno Verjus at the prestigious No.10 in the world and first in Paris.

Pottery & Poetry’s original aesthetics might be a show-stopping addition to any world-class diner, yet their true charm is to serve our own signature dishes with brightens and style that turn the casual into a celebratory. “We are open to requests and collaborations all the time, never restricting ourselves to a certain style, palette, or form. We make bespoke collections all the time, as well as limited edition sets, unique corporate gifts, or special events giveaways.” Their latest experiment with forms and glazes was displayed at London’s Cluster Crafts showcase for contemporary craft and design.

Every POTTERY & POETRY item travels multiple times through a set of hands before a block of clay is transformed into a piece of art. In this manual process of building, drying, retouching, sanding, smoothing, and hand-glazing, ultimate uniqueness is born. So every pot and plate, even if it is part of the same collection, is personalized per se.
