BARCELONA CONTEMPORARY 2025 analyzed the relationship between body and space, and the hybridization between identities and cultural/physical/social/urban settings in contemporary times, through two main sections: MIXING IDENTITIES and FUTURE LANDSCAPES.
MIXING IDENTITIES analysed the hidden parts of our identities and their infinite modes of expression, through an immersive experience in the fascinating universe of the labyrinths of our consciousness. While FUTURE LANDSCAPES focused primarily on the concept of boundaries and structures between body, mind and soul, human identity and the city, space and ground, transforming surfaces into an open flow of pure ideas.

Among the participants of the 5th edition, Xavi Figueras‘s mesmerizing canvas explored the ephemeral interplay between water and the human body. Fascinated by the way water distorts and reshapes bodies into fleeting, surreal abstractions, Figueras creates compositions that balance technical realism with a poetic sense of impermanence. Visible brushstrokes and delicate pencil lines are intentionally left uncovered, adding texture and an honest, tactile quality to each work: this approach allows the viewer to connect not only with the subject but also with the process behind each piece, aimed to evoke moments of calm and introspection, crafting images that feel suspended in time.
Capturing phenomena-ephemeral moments with a different tool, Jean-Marc Brégeault merges classical cinema aesthetics with the bold spontaneity of street art, developing a deeply phenomenological approach to photography and drawing. Working primarily with analog film and scanned negatives, Brégeault chooses a medium that aligns with his philosophy: a material, tactile process that respects the complexity and ambiguity of perception. His images do not define, but rather evoke, inviting viewers into a space of suggestion and subjective interpretation.
Crystal D. Evans is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice weaves together photography, sculpture, painting, illustration, video, sound, and poetry to explore the fluid terrain of identity, memory, and perception. Rooted in phenomenology, her work investigates how we engage with the world through emotion, bodily awareness, and cultural memory. Guided by intuition, Evans allows each material to speak and transform organically, embracing fragmentation, distortion, and imperfection as essential components of meaning-making. Her process is deliberately open-ended, often incorporating unresolved forms and unexpected juxtapositions to reflect the non-linear, fragile nature of lived experience. Whether composing a photo-poetry book or assembling sculptural installations, her objective remains consistent: to create emotionally resonant works that linger in the viewer’s body and consciousness – opening pathways for connection, disruption, and transformation.

The fetured artists of BARCELONA CONTEMPORARY 2025 transcended geographical, cultural, and disciplinary boundaries, offering works that not only reflect the multiplicity of contemporary identity, but also provoke meaningful dialogue on how we navigate space, memory, and self in a rapidly changing world. In this sense, Joachim Seinfeld’s work explores these themes through carefully constructed, semi-fictional imagery. Composed of photographs taken over several years in various German towns, each scene is digitally reconstructed by inserting the artist himself into the frame-posing as both subject and observer within familiar yet recontextualized environments. This digital composition is not the endpoint but a stage in a multi-layered analogue process: the final works are transformed into classical black-and-white negatives and printed as silver gelatin prints, lending a tactile, almost archival quality to images that blur the boundaries between memory, fiction, and documentary. In this way, Seinfeld bridges the past and present, creating works that ask how we inhabit history, and how personal presence reshapes collective space.
The city’s vibrant cultural atmosphere, where tradition and experimentation collide, provides a fitting backdrop for a show that explores transformation, hybridity, and identity through contemporary art. Against this vibrant scene, Stephanie Bing‘s work navigates the boundaries between painting, photography, and digital media. Deeply rooted in both classical fine arts and contemporary aesthetics, Bing’s creative process is driven by an ongoing exploration of visual perception, color psychology, and emotional resonance. Across the several media she uses, her art reveals an intense sensitivity to light, texture, and rhythm, inviting viewers into vivid, sometimes uncanny visual experiences. Her objective is not simply to depict but to provoke aesthetic reactions, personal reflection, and a deeper awareness of the visual world, embracing both imperfection and precision, and speaking to the complexity of human perception in an age of constant transformation.
