BARCELONA CONTEMPORARY 2025 analyzed the relationship between body and space, and the hybridization between identities and cultural/physical/social/urban settings in contemporary times, through two main sections: MIXING IDENTITIES and FUTURE LANDSCAPES.
MIXING IDENTITIES analysed the hidden parts of our identities and their infinite modes of expression, through an immersive experience in the fascinating universe of the labyrinths of our consciousness. While FUTURE LANDSCAPES focused primarily on the concept of boundaries and structures between body, mind and soul, human identity and the city, space and ground, transforming surfaces into an open flow of pure ideas.
A shared thread of intuition, material exploration, and inner transformation connects the practices of the artists participating in the 7th edition of BARCELONA CONTEMPORARY, each engaging with different forms to reveal how art can hold memory, emotion, and renewed meaning. Maria Elena Nelson-Lavie preserves and promotes the artistic legacy of her mother, Maria Elena Lavie, whose work is defined by intuitive force, expressive vitality, and a profound exploration of visual tension. Through ARTEV, Nelson-Lavie curates this unique body of work, highlighting its authenticity and emotional depth: her mission is to safeguard a vibrant artistic heritage and invite contemporary audiences to rediscover the energy, sincerity, and imaginative power that shaped this vision.
This same intuitive drive emerges in Robert Khalvadjian’s practice where landscape is distilled into essential tensions of colour and rhythm: working primarily on crumpled paper, he embraces imperfection as a natural imprint, allowing each shade to gain intensity and emotional resonance. Influenced by Cézanne’s chromatic structures, Khalvadjian reduces landscape to its essential tensions, guided by music and a pursuit of pure harmony.
Grounded in a lifelong exploration of form, material, and narrative, Megan Harmer’s multidisciplinary practice spans illustration, painting, and sculptural ceramics, and integrating skills developed across design, art direction, and international exhibitions. The artist creates works that merge technical precision with emotional intuition, transforming organic patterns into meditative visual experiences with the goal to create portals of contemplation – spaces where viewers can pause, connect, and rediscover presence through art.
Echoes of memory and renewal also shape Eva Toth intricate visual narratives, merging literary history with contemporary artistic expression; guided by a lifelong bond with stories and a commitment to sustainability, she repurposes existing volumes through layered techniques of acrylic painting, decoupage, soft-paper coatings, and metallic stencilling. Her works explore female identity, duality, and emotional depth, revealing the many selves we carry beneath the surface – her art seeks to honour the past while illuminating inner transformation, celebrating the enduring power of renewal and imagination.
