The word “canvas” was used for the first time in Italy in the 14th century and it has become the most common support medium for oil painting, replacing wooden panels. Over the centuries, the canvas’ meaning has changed, starting from paintings, through photographic and cinematographic film, exploring the human body, to the digital world. Canvas is the creatives’ common ground, on which they can express themselves. We invite all the artists to share their personal artistic research through any kind of media, from painting to sculptures and installation, from photography to video art and live performance.

BODYSPACES is about the perception of our body, the first step for the appropriation of our identity. The bodies are the spaces for human experimentation, for the achievement of humanity and its overtaking. The contemporary bodies are composed of corporal and virtual elements influenced by physical and psychical actions. The artistic work on the body’s hybridization will create a new concept of humanity starting any kind of possible life in contemporary multicultural society. We have invited artists to express, through their artistic research, the relationship between the body and human life, celebrating the new identities in contemporary times.

During the opening event on January 27, we have been very pleased to receive many visitors and artists to our venue, Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello. Luca Villa, in collaboration with Sara Grassi, opened the exhibition with the performance “Always in Rimini”, during which visitors were thrown into the quintessential vacation spot of the 1970s: Rimini, a city that has become part of Italy’s popular culture. The concept of the exhibition was also nicely enhanced by the Italian dancer and actress Maria Sofia Palmieri, who, together with Silvia Bordi, revived the monologue “Molly Bloom, or Penelope, the Chains of Love” from James Joyce’s masterpiece “Ulysses”, which encompasses the core sense of the whole novel.

Music and dance took centre stage in Marianna Syfridi’s performance, “Khaki versus Colors”, during which the Greek musician Avgoustinos Michalopoulos Stathopoulos, during which the musician with his double bass interplays with the dancer, setting limits to her kinetic expression and affecting her in various ways. The piece is based on the poem by Palestinian M. Barghouti’s poem ‘I have no problem’, which deals with the theme of the long-term oppression of the Palestinian people by Israel.

Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello also welcomed many artists to tackle the theme of perceiving our bodies and human life. The highly personal, distinctive and inventive style of Caterina Varchetta, from France, stems from the mixture of materials and colours (pigments, copper leaf, gold or silver, sand). The artist brings together painting on porcelain and painting on canvas in projects in which the boundaries between their respective practices are increasingly blurred. The Greek artist Olga Dimoliati through her art tries to portray the feelings and sensations that run through her body and soul while dancing, achieving what is known as euphoria and elevation of the soul and experiencing the sensation of dancing in a sea of energy. That energy that is engendered while dancing and that, unconsciously, spreads all around creating magical moments of happiness.

Viviana Falcade‘s art represents the meaning of Existence, emotions, intuition, light, shadow and connection with the Universe. The artist’s intention is to convey, through her images, messages with healing powers: she uses lists of parquet floors that become feminine figures with vertical leaps. Dedicated to the Other Person is the cycle “Love in Times of Plague” by the Polish artist Joanna Guzowska. The paintings show couples wearing masks, not only the physical and hygienic ones we wore during the pandemic, but also the unseen ones we wore in our relationship with each other. The figures are made up of geometric figures representing pieces of clothing. They symbolize shreds of lives, a trace of who they are, what they do and what they want.

Samar Aseeri, from Bahrain, creates art with the intention of grabbing the audience’s eye and drawing them into a deeper relationship with it while leaving a sense of mystery to ponder. Her paintings are made using multiple layers to conceal the true meaning of emotions, not every story needs to be told. Nico Biso‘s pictorial product takes on its identity as the choice of colour fills the canvas. The lashing passion for colour in all its modulations gives different representations of creative symphonies, defined by the story through unpredictable pictorial deviations. The key to Biso’s art is the unpredictable gesturality made up of emotions and intuitions that range across the canvas, becoming the only source of aesthetic dialogue. With his figurative paintings, Spanish artist and illustrator Marc Conesa seem to lead us into the meanders of a fantasy world. He paints evanescent drooling faces, shrieking mouths. Looking at his works, one gets the impression that the protagonists that inhabit his paintings come to life and acquire magical properties in the eyes of the viewers.

OUR LOCATION

Palazzoalbrizzicapello 001 1

Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello is one of the most known palaces of the Renaissance in Venice. It is a historical building dating back to the 16th century, and it has been owned by several noble Venetian families, as demonstrated by the frescoed ceilings, the artistic stuccos and the fine furniture that enriches its rooms. The Palace welcomes visitors with its beautiful private garden on the ground floor, and then it gathers the guests in its large first-floor salons, in which past and present dialogue together. The restored Old Masters’ frescoes and the contemporary art masterpieces that are periodically shown in the exhibitions hosted here, make Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello the perfect location for the balance between old and new, between ancient environment and contemporary art, architecture and design.

Today the building is managed by ACIT Venice – the Italian-German Cultural Association – which is considered one of the most important intercultural associations in Europe. Thanks to the ACIT unceasing cultural activity, Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello has nowadays frequent collaborations with the Goethe Institute and with other local and international institutions, maintaining its ancient reputation. Because of these relations, it presents a huge program of memorable art exhibitions, conferences, congresses and concerts. Among the last institutional exhibitions, is its participation in the 58th Venice Biennale with the Guatemala pavilion, the Dominican Republic pavilion and the Grenada pavilion. ITSLIQUID Group already had the pleasure to hold some festivals and exhibitions in Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello, such as MORPHOS Festival and FUTURE IDENTITIES Festival, both in 2014.
