The word “canvas” was used for the first time in Italy in the 14th century and it has become the most common support medium for oil painting, replacing wooden panels. Over the centuries, the canvas’ meaning has changed, starting from paintings, through photographic and cinematographic film, exploring the human body, to the digital world. Canvas is the creatives’ common ground, on which they can express themselves. We invite all the artists to share their personal artistic research through any kind of media, from painting to sculptures and installation, from photography to video art and live performance.
BORDERPLACES focuses on the concept of “borders” in contemporary society, exploring their existence between the soul and the body, humans and urban spaces, cities and the ground, which shape people’s lives and behaviours, often leading to restricted freedom and a feeling of detachment. In response to these limitations, human beings strive to break free and forge innovative possibilities for themselves. We envision a world where “liquid cities” emerge, where differences no longer serve as social barriers but instead give rise to new possibilities.

BORDERPLACES opened its doors on the 31st of August, bringing together a lively crowd. The opening was enriched by the beautiful piano performance of Antimo Magnotta, an Italian composer and author based in London: his music added a special touch to the evening, creating the perfect mood for the exhibition, where art pushes boundaries and sparks our imaginations.
In this atmosphere we had the pleasure to present many talented artists, like Emna Daoud; her art blurs the line between ordinary and extraordinary, by zooming in on life’s little gems, like the velvety skin of a fruit or the intricate pattern on a piece of ceramic as she finds beauty in the small thing of everyday life. By focusing on these tiny details, she reminds us to appreciate the simple stuff we often overlook. Paul Scott Malone believes that painting is the perfect way to tell stories and get your point across; he focuses on the whole universe and how it affects us humans. The Arizona desert is his muse, it’s a place that’s calm but wild, just like his art. His aim is to break borders and let your imagination run wild.

Takuya Mizukami‘s art focuses on one thing: oneness. He wants us to think about what kind of world we’re leaving for our great-great-grandkids. He has a unique style using tea-ink and other natural materials; inspired by Native American wisdom, his art makes you think about how we’re all connected: humans, animals, plants, everything.
Being part of exhibitions like BORDERPLACES is about breaking down boundaries, and making us see the world in a new light. Our artists have shown us how art can do that – by finding beauty in the ordinary, telling big stories, and reminding us that we’re all together.
