ANIMA MUNDI is the invisible energy behind all the natural and artificial elements that allow the planet to live. Thanks to the hidden connections of ANIMA MUNDI, all the ecosystems of the Earth, before and after the appearance of mankind, found their equilibrium, their ways to live and to develop themselves, to transform and to evolve. All the beings of the planet, plants, minerals, and animals are permeated by a secret force that has always stimulated human thought and research.

The festival aims to discover these multiple forms of hidden connections between the soul and the body, mankind and the natural elements, the natural spaces and the cities. We invited artists to show their reflections about the various ways in which the ANIMA MUNDI expresses the relationships among all the existing entities and the natural and cultural systems and to represent by their artistic works the processes of the evolution of the world in which we all live. Artists, designers and architects were invited to talk about ANIMA MUNDI through photo reportage of cities, hidden places, photographic documentaries, personal experiences, presenting their works of photography, painting, sculpture/installation, design and architecture, video art and live performance.

Through diverse techniques and perspectives, all artists contributed to deepening the exploration of the theme, offering spectators an immersive journey into the complexities of consciousness. Among them, Catherine De Ryck employed different textures in her work – such as the roughness of stones, the transparency of water and glass, and the variety of tissues: she captures these elements with a blend of hyper-realistic and semi-abstract styles, emphasizing atmosphere, emotion, and texture in her paintings. Each piece in the collection acts as a nexus where material and metaphysical realms converge, revealing the subtle but powerful exchanges that highlight our perceptions.

The work of Liesbeth van Rhijn exemplified how can art serve as a profound medium for healing and self-expression, resonating deeply with the thematic core of CONSCIOUSNESS in the ANIMA MUNDI exhibition. By transforming personal adversity into artistic expression, her work explores themes of suffering and resilience by combining expressionism, symbolism, and modern art across mixed media, oil, acrylic, and digital formats, and incorporating poetry to enrich the narrative of her pieces.

A nuanced interpretation of cognitive and emotional landscapes is also evident in the work of visual artist Monika Trypuz, whose art focuses on the value of the present moment. She believes that concentrating on being here and now, with reflection on past experiences and openness to upcoming events, is the best practice for living fully for every person, regardless of culture and religion. According to the artist, conscious persistence in the present moment builds a network of mutual understanding among people.

Using the same interdisciplinary approach in performance and public art installations, Joan Farrenkopf explored the interconnectedness of all beings, aligning seamlessly with the theme of “Consciousness” at the ANIMA MUNDI festival. Her site-specific projects, deeply informed by community, history, and place, not only foster social interaction but also emphasize global connections, encouraging viewers to reflect on their relationship with the environment and each other.

The opening evening was profoundly enriched by an evocative performance by ValkirijA & TataU Shibari Art Performers utilizing the traditional Japanese technique of Kinbaku bondage to weave a visual and emotional narrative through the intricate patterning of ropes on the human body. Through their performance, ValkirijA & TataU challenged conventional norms and highlighted the importance of personal exploration and the development of spirit, body, and mind, effectively mirroring the exhibition’s exploration of human awareness and the invisible threads that connect us all.

Through his expressive use of color and form, Taran Mathur, a self-taught artist known for his vibrant and dynamic paintings, invited viewers to experience the complexities of human emotion and the transformative power of visual art in understanding and shaping our perceptions of the world. Monair Hyman’s artistic exploration during her time in Venice in 2023 by works in graphite, ink, and collage critically engages with historical representations of the human body as spectacle, particularly within the context of the 19th-century Venice Biennale. By questioning the economies of visibility and the dynamics of the gaze that objectified and exoticized bodies, Hyman’s art challenges and seeks to rewrite the narratives of who is seen and who remains unseen, thus linking past injustices with contemporary awareness and resistance. Finally, Anna Alfanana used her paintings to explore the dialogue between the self and the sublime. Her abstract expressionist style, characterized by emotive allure and a commitment to authenticity, offers an intimate dialogue with the viewer, invoking a journey into the depths of human consciousness and the power of art to transform and enrich lives.

Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello is one of the most known palaces of the Renaissance in Venice. It is a historical building dating back to the 16th century, and it has been owned by several noble Venetian families, as demonstrated by the frescoed ceilings, the artistic stuccos and the fine furniture that enriches its rooms. The Palace welcomes visitors with its beautiful private garden on the ground floor, and then it gathers the guests in its large first-floor salons, in which past and present dialogue together. The restored Old Masters’ frescoes and the contemporary art masterpieces that are periodically shown in the exhibitions hosted here, make Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello the perfect location for the balance between old and new, between ancient environment and contemporary art, architecture and design.

Today the building is managed by ACIT Venice – the Italian-German Cultural Association – which is considered one of the most important intercultural associations in Europe. Thanks to the ACIT unceasing cultural activity, Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello has nowadays frequent collaborations with the Goethe Institute and with other local and international institutions, maintaining its ancient reputation. Because of these relations, it presents a huge program of memorable art exhibitions, conferences, congresses and concerts. Among the last institutional exhibitions, is its participation in the 58th Venice Biennale with the Guatemala pavilion, the Dominican Republic pavilion and the Grenada pavilion. ITSLIQUID Group already had the pleasure to hold some festivals and exhibitions in Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello, such as MORPHOS Festival and FUTURE IDENTITIES Festival, both in 2014.
