The tenth edition of CONTEMPORARY VENICE 2022 analyzed the relationship between body and space, and the hybridization between identities and cultural/physical/social/urban settings in contemporary time, through two main sections: MIXING IDENTITIES and FUTURE LANDSCAPES.
MIXING IDENTITIES analyzed the hidden parts of our identities, through an immersive experience inside the fascinating universe of the complex labyrinths of our consciousness, while FUTURE LANDSCAPES explored the concept of the borders and the structures between body, mind, and soul, the human identity and the city, the space and the ground.

The theme of MIXING IDENTITIES focused on the perceptions of reality and how it is expressed and communicated inside a complicated universe. During the exhibition we could see how Manecas Camelo uses painting and drawing as a means of communication: for the artist life cannot be separated from the senses, every brushstroke is an expression of feelings and perceptions. A more personal approach toward the deep analysis of identity, body, and space was taken by Desire De Lacy. The artworks she presented during CONTEMPORARY VENICE explore traumatic experiences and how they shape one’s identity. Whether it’s happiness or sadness, positive or bad feelings, her artworks are a step toward identifying and appreciating her emotions. Artist AKO also focused on emotions, more precisely positive ones. In the exhibited series motivating words linked with colour are supposed to uplift the viewers, to give them what they needed or what they desired because the attitude towards life often has a tremendous impact on the perception of identities and reality.

The elusive space between our sense of the world and the many labyrinths of our subconscious is where art can be located: this idea was expressed by Ber Lazarus as a counterbalance to chaos and human action in the fight against it. His artistic work investigated how objects interact in space and the nature of shapes in motion. MIXING IDENTITIES also posed some introspective questions about feelings and perceptions, interrogatives to which Olena Kolomoets tried to answer. The consciousness of the viewer lies at the heart of Olena’s art, inviting them to feel the sentiments that are buried inside. Heidi Mustonen is another artist that sought to engage the audience in immersive experiences and limitless means of expression. Her works were consistent with the idea that there is an innate link that connects us with other bodies and spaces to perceive the surrounding reality.

The second theme proposed for this exhibition was FUTURE LANDSCAPE. Rika Maja Duevel, from Norway, enclosed the theme in her work “The Internal and External Fight with that Grey Day”; she was inspired by a period of rainy Amsterdam days when the sun was a distant memory and, through this work, she reproduced and transformed her reality in a new form as a reminder that, even when we are in a lower state of mind, the importance of being grateful for each moment we have, is the most important thing. Using the language of film, fashion, and dance, borders and structures were also the main concepts of Elli Ioannou‘s video artwork “Aphrodite Moderne” which was an interpretation of a modern Aphrodite, in the archetype of gender reversal from female to male.

“Skullpturas” created by Selina Grazia are her personal creations, with a technique she has originated through years of experimentation, which clearly represented the theme proposed for this exhibition in which art gives us the possibility to experience with the mind and redefine nature, borders, and spaces that surround us. Her works, born from the combination of her scientific background and artistic creativity, fused natural elements and precious metals, to focus on the juxtaposition of the subject’s mortality and fragility to the revered eternal nature of precious metals. She looked to explore the relationship we have with mortality and the natural world.
The tenth edition of CONTEMPORARY VENICE has created a strong communication system by giving the opportunity to creatives to inspire and express themselves, through all kinds of art and have the power to transform the word.

OUR LOCATIONS

Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello is one of the most known palaces of the Renaissance in Venice. It is a historical building dated back to the 16th century, and it has been owned by several noble Venetian families, as demonstrated by the frescoed ceilings, the artistic stuccos and the fine furniture that enrich its rooms. The Palace welcomes visitors with its beautiful private garden on the ground floor, and then it gathers the guests in its large first-floor salons, in which past and present dialogue together. The restored Old Masters’ frescoes and the contemporary art masterpieces that are periodically shown in the exhibitions hosted here, make Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello the perfect location for the balance between old and new, between ancient environment and contemporary art, architecture and design.
Today the building is managed by ACIT Venice – the Italian-German Cultural Association – which is considered one of the most important intercultural associations in Europe. Thanks to the ACIT unceasing cultural activity, Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello has nowadays frequent collaborations with the Goethe Institute and with other local and international institutions, maintaining its ancient reputation. Because of these relations, it presents a huge program of memorable art exhibitions, conferences, congresses and concerts. Among the last institutional exhibitions, its participation in the 58th Venice Biennale with the Guatemala pavilion, the Dominican Republic pavilion and the Grenada pavilion. ITSLIQUID Group already had the pleasure to held some festivals and exhibitions in Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello, as MORPHOS Festival and FUTURE IDENTITIES Festival, both in 2014.
