The word “canvas” was used for the first time in Italy in the 14th century and it has become the most common support medium for oil painting, replacing wooden panels. Over the centuries, the canvas’ meaning has changed, starting from paintings, through photographic and cinematographic film, exploring the human body, to the digital world. Canvas is the creatives’ common ground, on which they can express themselves. We invite all the artists to share their personal artistic research through any kind of media, from painting to sculptures and installation, from photography to video art and live performance.

The concept of MIXING IDENTITIES is based on the reconstruction of new identities: their transformation is essential to cope with the changes in the contemporary world. The process of building ourselves passes through the continuous relations with other people’s identities and the identities of communities, cultures and societies. The event focuses on the human body as a mutable system that connects us with other bodies and spaces to perceive the surrounding reality, a strong communication system with its own language and infinite ways of expression. We invite artists to explore the hidden parts of our identities, through an immersive experience inside the fascinating universe of the complex mazes of our consciousness.

At the opening event on 03 March, we had the pleasure of welcoming numerous visitors and artists to our premises, Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello. The concept of the art fair was pleasantly enhanced by Giulia Vecchi who, in collaboration with Flaminia Amoroso, opened the exhibition with the performance “What kind of”, a short representation of how the search for a state of peacefulness can pass through two human beings. Holding each other, physically and mentally, looking at each other and understanding how to help or be helped.

Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello welcomed many artists who faced the theme of perception of the surrounding reality. With his highly eclectic, brash and electrifying style, Sasha Hartmann, stage name HARTI, provoked and engaged viewers by challenging them to peel back the layers of false reality with which society masks the truth. His paintings are pure pop entertainment, the artist draws us into a realm of painful lucidity and dreamlike precision.

The body as a shifting structure is a theme that the American artist Jordana Hanono has interpreted masterfully: her art is a poetic mix of abstract, pop and figurative art. Flora Labella, from London, invites us to go beyond what at first glance seems to us to be beauty and elegance. Where there is light, there is also shadow. The sheer gracefulness and purity of the horses in the works presented were captured as if in a dream, in an imaginary realm, an idyllic place where no animal is harmed or killed.

The Austrian artist Regina Altmann establishes an active dialogue between the viewer and the image: her portraits of children can be mirrors, reflecting a person’s inner questions and feelings. The purpose and intention of his art are not the depictions of real figures: both narrative and creativity play an equally important role in her paintings. The pictorial space does not end at the edges of the works, but goes beyond the frame when observed, in an associative space between the observer and the painting. Rhythm, colour and form determine Regina Altmann’s pictorial concept.

Ben Vieberink, from The Netherlands, uses clay to bring out the infinite facets of the human soul, the cracks that form on the bodies and faces of the figures photographed are none other than the emotions, thoughts and journeys that each of us makes during our lives. Fluidity and brilliance shine through in Poornima Dayal‘s imaginative art. In her paintings, there is a display of imagination through colours and shades, in a lucid representation of the meaning surrounding the work.

OUR LOCATION

Palazzoalbrizzicapello 001 1

Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello is one of the most known palaces of the Renaissance in Venice. It is a historical building dating back to the 16th century, and it has been owned by several noble Venetian families, as demonstrated by the frescoed ceilings, the artistic stuccos and the fine furniture that enriches its rooms. The Palace welcomes visitors with its beautiful private garden on the ground floor, and then it gathers the guests in its large first-floor salons, in which past and present dialogue together. The restored Old Masters’ frescoes and the contemporary art masterpieces that are periodically shown in the exhibitions hosted here, make Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello the perfect location for the balance between old and new, between ancient environment and contemporary art, architecture and design.

Today the building is managed by ACIT Venice – the Italian-German Cultural Association – which is considered one of the most important intercultural associations in Europe. Thanks to the ACIT unceasing cultural activity, Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello has nowadays frequent collaborations with the Goethe Institute and with other local and international institutions, maintaining its ancient reputation. Because of these relations, it presents a huge program of memorable art exhibitions, conferences, congresses and concerts. Among the last institutional exhibitions, is its participation in the 58th Venice Biennale with the Guatemala pavilion, the Dominican Republic pavilion and the Grenada pavilion. ITSLIQUID Group already had the pleasure to hold some festivals and exhibitions in Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello, such as MORPHOS Festival and FUTURE IDENTITIES Festival, both in 2014.
