The selected artists participating in MORPHOS offer diverse interpretations of transformation and identity, exploring the fluid boundaries between the physical and metaphysical. Blending intuitive experimentation and emotional exploration through photography, Laurry Ramirez shifts between representational and abstract photography, often inspired by remote landscapes and cultural encounters, reflecting transformation not only in her subjects but also in the viewer’s perception of reality. Her work invites a fluid engagement with changing perspectives, making it an ideal contribution to the theme of evolving forms. In contrast, Jai Maddalena, using photography with a distinct approach, merges fine art sensibilities with a documentary style. His practice, which spans traditional and digital media, photography, cinematography, and installation, transforms everyday moments into visually compelling narratives. Through light, composition, and context, he elevates the ordinary, while his conceptual approach – rooted in storytelling – captures human presence, memory, and emotion with subtle precision. Maddalena’s work challenges perceptions and creates immersive, emotionally resonant experiences that speak to the complexity of identity and transformation.

Ning Jiang‘s “Expressivelines” exemplifies how performance art can redefine physical and emotional boundaries. Through her ritualistic, intermodal approach, where movement, drawing, photography, and video interact and evolve in response to one another, she fosters a dynamic dialogue between her body and its environment. This continuous transformation, coupled with the audience’s invitation to co-create, directly reflects the theme of MORPHOS, emphasizing the fluid nature of identity and self-awareness. Similarly, U.S. artist Jordan Binney explores the human experience through large-scale oil paintings that confront themes of betrayal, vulnerability, and trauma. By juxtaposing flat, hard-edge applications of red with meticulously rendered figures, he challenges viewers to face universal truths about nudity, vulnerability, and raw human experience. His use of his own nude body in the works allows him to reclaim agency over the male gaze, embodying power, choice, and personal healing.

The exhibition finds its ideal setting in the historic Palazzo Albrizzi, a space where the past and present converge, offering a vibrant platform for the continuous evolution of artistic expression. The Palazzo’s walls resonate with the echoes of time, while simultaneously embracing contemporary forms, creating a dialogue that Sidney Auger’s work perfectly complements. Auger, a London-based artist specializing in Medium Format black and white film, explores the transient nature of identity and the intersection of past and present. In Longing to Belong, for example, he examines “Temporary Identities,” capturing a group of nuns absorbed in their phones – a striking contrast between religious devotion and modern distractions. With meticulous attention to light, form, and space, particularly in sacred settings, Auger reflects on the fleeting nature of existence and identity, drawing connections to symbols of mortality, as seen in cemeteries and gravestones.

Each work delves into the constant evolution of self, exploring the boundaries between the material and the immaterial, a theme echoed in Dolphin Brown‘s immersive video installations. Using advanced digital techniques, Brown transforms everyday footage into abstract, ethereal visuals that redefine the possibilities of video art. Her journey, reshaped by a life-altering illness, led her to create pieces that serve as sanctuaries of peace and reflection. These works invite viewers to slow down, offering serene, transformative experiences that bridge the physical and the spiritual, fostering moments of tranquility and deep connection. In a similarly introspective vein, Kyoka Katori’s paintings explore the delicate spaces between life and death, where themes of mortality, innocence, and the tension between beauty and decay intertwine. Her work embodies a quiet transformation, with figures suspended in a fragile balance, prompting viewers to contemplate both personal and collective metamorphosis. Katori’s emotionally charged compositions, marked by stillness and latent violence, reveal the hidden forces that drive change, challenging observers to reflect on the transformative power of both the seen and unseen.

Dora Motèque is an interdisciplinary artist and engineer, exploring the intersection of abstraction, sensory perception, and interactive technology. Her work invites the viewer to move beyond passive observation, becoming an active participant in the experience. Her ongoing project “Sounding Canvas” embeds sensors beneath painted surfaces, allowing touch to generate sound, inviting deeper physical and emotional engagement with abstract forms. In a parallel vein, Mihaela-Adriana Albu’s work offers a blend of tradition and modernity, bridging cultural history with contemporary artistic expression. Drawing from Eastern European folklore and Romanian traditions, Albu’s paintings transform symbols and feminine silhouettes into living characters within abstract landscapes. Through her vibrant use of color and dynamic shapes, she creates a fluid space where the past and present coexist, evoking an ongoing transformation of memory, identity, and culture.

OUR LOCATION

palazzoalbrizzicapello 001 1

Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello is one of the most known palaces of the Renaissance in Venice. It is a historical building dating back to the 16th century, and it has been owned by several noble Venetian families, as demonstrated by the frescoed ceilings, the artistic stuccos and the fine furniture that enriches its rooms. The Palace welcomes visitors with its beautiful private garden on the ground floor, and then it gathers the guests in its large first-floor salons, in which past and present dialogue together. The restored Old Masters’ frescoes and the contemporary art masterpieces that are periodically shown in the exhibitions hosted here, make Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello the perfect location for the balance between old and new, between ancient environment and contemporary art, architecture and design.

Today the building is managed by ACIT Venice – the Italian-German Cultural Association – which is considered one of the most important intercultural associations in Europe. Thanks to the ACIT unceasing cultural activity, Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello has nowadays frequent collaborations with the Goethe Institute and with other local and international institutions, maintaining its ancient reputation. Because of these relations, it presents a huge program of memorable art exhibitions, conferences, congresses and concerts. Among the last institutional exhibitions, is its participation in the 58th Venice Biennale with the Guatemala pavilion, the Dominican Republic pavilion and the Grenada pavilion. ITSLIQUID Group already had the pleasure to hold some festivals and exhibitions in Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello, such as MORPHOS Festival and FUTURE IDENTITIES Festival, both in 2014.
