Rockwell Group lights up Brookfield place New York
Using color and light to symbolize hope for the future, the interdisciplinary firm Rockwell Group’s LAB Studio have created “luminaries” – a public, interactive luminescent display set in the winter garden atrium of Brookfield place, in Lower Manhattan, which recently underwent a $250 million renovation.

Rows of cube-shaped, fabric lanterns embedded with LEDs have been suspended across the wide atrium; glowing in different colors, intensity and animation. Through the use of capacitive technology the installation invites visitor’s active participation by white, touch sensitive corian “wishing stations“.

These stations respond to user’s touch, sending the action to the canopy of 650 twinkling lanterns and translating it into an ornate display of dappling lights and colors. Capturing the holiday spirit, visitors to the renovated Brookfield place retail complex will be able to pause, and enjoy the collaborative lighting ritual, aiming to instill hope and forward thinking of the new year.
