Jeff Corwin, acclaimed American photographer, presents a provocative and timely body of work that addresses one of the most pressing crises in the United States today. After decades of capturing the world through a commercial lens, Corwin brings his discerning eye to Venice with a series that serves as both a visceral critique and a stark documentation of the American gun epidemic.

The project “Guns in America” was born from a moment of national trauma: the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, where 20 children and 6 adults were murdered. This tragedy, a symbol of the country’s systemic violence, sparked Corwin’s ongoing investigation into a government that fails to provide answers. Through studio-built assemblages – constructed from items found in antique stores, junk yards, and online – he creates a “theatre of violence” that mirrors the daily reality of a nation where gun ownership is a constitutionally protected right, yet public safety remains elusive.

The series is defined by a sophisticated hybrid workflow that blends the soul of 20th-century optics with 21st-century digital power. Corwin begins by meticulously constructing physical sets, “assemblages“, using found objects and historical artifacts. These are captured using a Hasselblad analog body paired with a Phase One medium format digital back. This specific combination is crucial: the analog Hasselblad lenses provide a unique “compression” and a poetic quality of light that modern digital lenses often lack, while the Phase One sensor captures a level of detail and dynamic range far beyond standard professional cameras. The final image is then “sculpted” through three different software programs and multiple custom color profiles, resulting in a hyper-realistic, vivid aesthetic that forces the viewer to confront the subject matter in high definition. By layering complex digital color profiles over meticulously constructed physical sets, Corwin creates a visual tension that reflects the psychological weight of the subject matter.

The exhibition invites the viewer to confront the stark truth of an ongoing tragedy, providing a meditative yet unsettling space to reflect on the intersections of heritage, violence, and the systemic failure to protect the innocent.

Jeff Corwin – About
Jeff Corwin is an American artist whose career spans over 40 years of award-winning photography. His professional journey has taken him from helicopters and jungles to oil rigs and aircraft carriers, capturing portraits of world-famous figures and executing high-profile assignments for global corporate clients. In his transition to fine art, Corwin has retained his mastery of design and technical precision. His practice is defined by a rigorous process: building intricate assemblages in-studio and utilizing a hybrid of analog equipment and sophisticated digital software to achieve his signature aesthetic. By mounting a Phase One digital-back onto an analog Hasselblad body, Corwin achieves a level of resolution and depth superior to standard cameras, allowing him to capture the “sculptural” quality of his subjects. Corwin’s fine art photography has garnered numerous international awards and has been featured in prestigious museum exhibitions and gallery shows worldwide. His work is held in permanent collections and has been widely documented in fine art publications, radio, and national newspapers. He is currently represented by several contemporary galleries and continues to use his lens to explore the critical social landscapes of contemporary America.
