Barbara Gundlach is a visual artist working mainly with video, sound, performance and photography. Born and raised in Cologne, Germany, she studied for four years at the Humboldt University Law School in Berlin, and the Maximilian University Law School in Munich, Germany. The artist graduated from the New Media Program at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in NY in 2020. Prior to this, she studied narrative Film and Cinema at New York University and received her MA in American studies with a focus on Urban Landscape, History and Film from Columbia University in New York. Before pursuing her career as a full-time artist, Barbara worked in independent film production in NY and for Discovery Channel, following her interest in online education within the medium of film and documentary on a global platform. To further pursue her passion for free global art education, Barbara joined Art21.org in the early 2000s for season 1 as an active member of the board of trustees, chairing the development and educational teams to help create today’s biggest free and global online art education platform. The artist is currently based in New York City and Upstate NY.

“In my work, I am exploring the phenomenon of memory and its impact on human perception and experiences. I engage with video, performance, sound-art, projection mapping, as well as sculpture, photography, and performance. While implementing these various forms of expression, I often choose a conceptual, and raw approach to the artmaking process. I aim to trigger the viewer’s visceral awareness of their shifting states of perception.”

“My creative process is guided by the personal, as well as deeply intimate, experience of a prolonged coma caused by a severe head injury, which I survived over a decade ago. Artistically, I try to ask the seemingly simple question of what human memory is and how it affects our perception, existence, and societies as a whole. In this ongoing quest for clues and answers, I explore the multiple trails I stumble upon and use them as guiding elements in my work.”

“The visceral experience of losing one’s memory and the long recovery have triggered my artistic interest in the intricate relation between the five human senses and the brain’s access to its own “archive”, as well as the actual surroundings. To this day my work is greatly informed by my close engagement with neurological sciences and psychology – the two tools that helped me to recover.”
