THE WEEGEE EXHIBITION CENTRE – Tapiola, Finland
17 November 2017 – 22 April 2018

STILL / LIFE – Tapio Wirkkala Retrospective is the first changing exhibition in Aukio, the space for alternating exhibitions, dedicated to Rut Bryk’s and Tapio Wirkkala’s life’s work and design.

STILL / LIFE – Tapio Wirkkala Retrospective is based on an exhibition concept composed by designer Harri Koskinen, presenting Tapio Wirkkala’s life and work through the eyes of a colleague and contemporary designer. The majority of the exhibition is from EMMA’s Rut Bryk and Tapio Wirkkala collection. It also includes loans from other museums, producers and private persons. The exhibition has been curated by Harri Koskinen and Tapio Wirkkala Rut Bryk Foundation. The structures and visual look of the exhibition are designed by Harri Koskinen.

There are two parts to the exhibition. LIFE presents Wirkkala’s work and life, working processes, travels and backgrounds behind his creative work. The section covers several of Wirkkala’s important personal items. STILL highlights Wirkkala’s role as a sculptor whose hands shaped materials ranging from glass to plywood. It includes industrial works, unique art objects and prototypes, sketches and archive material. The exhibition covers about four hundred items in total.
STILL / LIFE is the main exhibition of the Tapio Wirkkala Rut Bryk Foundation’s 2015-2016 year of celebration. Before EMMA, the exhibition was seen at Rovaniemi Art Museum – Korundi, The Sámi Museum Siida, and Seinäjoki Art Hall. The 1000 m2 extension Aukio is opened by EMMA, the City of Espoo and Tapio Wirkkala Rut Bryk Foundation for Rut Bryk’s and Tapio Wirkkala’s collection and archive, as well as changing design exhibitions.

The life’s work of Rut Bryk (1916–1999) and Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) is entrusted to the care of the Tapio Wirkkala Rut Bryk Foundation, established in 2003. The foundation, City of Espoo and EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art have signed an agreement according to which EMMA manages over 5,000 objects owned by the foundation, including works of art, design objects, prototypes and archive material. The collection is both rare and internationally significant. The design legacy of the world-renowned artist-designer couple will open up in an even more diverse way when the new design space is launched in EMMA in November 2017. EMMA will display the collection permanently in exhibition centre WeeGee, Tapiola, Espoo. At this moment there is a possibility to view the cross-section of the collection in the Wirkkala Cabinet, located on the ground floor WeeGee building, free of charge.

Bettina Pousttchi (*1971 in Mainz, lives in Berlin) works at the interface between sculpture, photography and architecture. Her temporary photographic interventions in public space often take up whole walls of buildings, referencing the urban or historical context of a place. Pousttchi articulates percepetions of reality in the digital age and explores the relationship between memory and history from a transnational perspective. For her exhibition “In Recent Years” at the Berlinische Galerie she has created a façade for the entire entrance zone of the museum. In addition, the first of the big exhibition halls houses an overview of her sculpture and photography, including recent works. Read more

Roger Eberhard | Human Territoriality

Art | July 5, 2020

“Human Territoriality” is a selection of Roger Eberhard’s photographs of former borders, around the globe and down through the course of human history. Some of these border lines have shifted over time, by only a few hundred meters or much more, due to climate change or man-made changes in the landscape, others have vanished with the fall of mighty empires on either side.
