The mark of Carlo Scarpa

Giuseppe Mazzariol, director of the Fondazione Querini Stampalia, recalled the creation of Carlo Scarpa’s spaces, saturated with light from the very beginning. Scarpa left a sign which is both ancient and modern, full of forerunner energy whose propelling push has not run out yet. As a blooming tree, it has favored the architectural works of Valeriano Pastor, Mario Botta, and inspired an engaging interaction with other different art expressions: photography, video, music, dance.

The mark of Carlo Scarpa describes the relation/influence between the Venetian master and architects and modern artists interpreting Carlo Scarpa’s space at the Fondazione: Margarita Andreu, Ivana Franke, Candida Höfer, Giulio Paolini, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Remo Salvadori and Haris Epaminonda. Moreover: Sasha Waltz (choreographer), Atsuhiko Gondai (composer) with Mario Brunello (cellist), Alessandra Chemollo (photographer), Riccardo De Cal (director), Giorgio Camuffo (designer).

The exhibition gathers various examples besides a group of drawings from the foundation’s Archive, showing the first ideas conceived of this space: fertility and creative work in Scarpa’s sign. Venice remains the cradle of this artistic crossroads as well as a frontier of cultures. In 1868, as expressly declared in his will, Giovanni Querini asked for the foundation to open the museum and the library to the public, looking at the future. Scarpa’s work is the living expression of this: water flows inside the structure and light freely crosses it.
