VERBA Jewellery brand
Designer Anna Fanigina
VERBA is a jewellery brand that was created back in 2005 by the Latvian designer Anna Fanigina. Brand name VERBA (“words” in Latin) came from the phrase “adbibere verba puro pectore” (“accept words with a pure heart”) on a cold rainy evening of December the 5th in St. Petersburg, when designer was returning from a lecture in the Hermitage Museum.
The quote “adbibere verba puro pectore” also represents the main idea of the brand – jewellery is not only a pretty object, but it is also a carrier of feelings, thoughts and philosophy as contributions from the heart. The main source of inspiration to create jewellery are words and each piece has an inscription in Latin. Aesthetics of the brand are based on transparency, ascetics and simplicity.
Over the years, VERBA has grown into a wide branched tree with many permanent and unique collections. It has replenished its “vocabulary” with ancient Greek and even Japanese and expanded its reach by participating in exhibitions not only in neighbouring Lithuania, Russia and Estonia, but also Italy, Greece, France, the Netherlands, Germany, United Arab Emirates and Japan.
The brand is proud to be the author of diplomatic presents that the Republic of Latvia has gifted to presidents (including the president of Italy Sergio Mattarella), princes and prime ministers, as well as the Pope Francis himself, who was awarded with a special silver bookmark. Nevertheless the main achievement and value are the people who trust VERBA jewellery at the most important moments of their lives and share their feelings, hopes for the future and inspiration.
About the designer
After graduating from University of Latvia with B.Sc degree in mathematics and Riga Applied Art College as a metal designer in 2000 Anna knew without hesitation that she wanted to practice the new craft – jewellery making. In the autumn of the same year the first studio with the most basic equipment was set – a gas stove, minimal set of tools and an amateur polishing machine.
The first created piece was a series of six rings with cabochons. Anna was inspired to create them after seeing historical rings at the Gold Room of the Hermitage Museum. In 2001, came the next important jewellery piece – the first ring with an inscription in Latin, from which her brand VERBA developed. It took some time to realise that the main sources of inspiration come from the Ancient World. It is the art of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, but not only jewellery from that time, the whole cultural heritage.
